Long Prehensile Protrusions Can Facilitate Cancer Cell Invasion through the Basement Membrane
A basic process in cancer is the breaching of basement-membrane barriers to permit tissue invasion. Cancer cells can use proteases and physical mechanisms to produce initial holes in basement membranes, but how cells squeeze through this barrier into ...

Comparison of the transmembrane mucins MUC1 and MUC16 in epithelial barrier function. [PDF]
Membrane-anchored mucins are present in the apical surface glycocalyx of mucosal epithelial cells, each mucosal epithelium having at least two of the mucins.

Protective role of Cav-1 in pneumolysin-induced endothelial barrier dysfunction
Pneumolysin (PLY) is a bacterial pore forming toxin and primary virulence factor of Streptococcus pneumonia, a major cause of pneumonia. PLY binds cholesterol-rich domains of the endothelial cell (EC) plasma membrane resulting in pore assembly and ...

Selective Diffusion Barriers Separate Membrane Compartments [PDF]
We have investigated exchange of molecules between different membrane domains on a highly compartmentalized cell, the spermatozoon. Using Alexa Fluor 555-cholera toxin B-subunit we have observed clustering of preexisting GM1 gangliosides which diffused across the anterior acrosome-equatorial segment interface but did not access the postacrosome.

Advances in research on labyrinth membranous barriers
Integrity of the membranous labyrinth barrier system is of critical importance, which promotes inner ear homeostasis and maintains its features. The membranous labyrinth barrier system is divided into several subsets of barriers which, although independent from each other, are interrelated.

Dietary Protein Intake and Peritoneal Protein Losses in Peritoneal Dialysis Patients
ABSTRACT Introduction Peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients lose protein in their waste dialysate, potentially increasing their risk for malnutrition. We wished to determine whether there was any association between losses and dietary protein intake (DPI). Methods DPI was assessed from 24‐h dietary recall using Nutrics software.
