THE SEX DIFFERENCE IN THE BASAL METABOLIC RATE

Child Development, 1953
The existence of a sex difference in the basal oxygen consumption is a matter of considerable importance, both of itself and in its broader implications. Since boys have a higher oxygen consumption under basal conditions, beginning even before the eighth year (6, 7), separate norms for boys and girls obviously are necessary.

Basal metabolic rate in pregnant adolescents

Clinical Nutrition ESPEN, 2018
In most clinical settings basal metabolic rate (BMR) is estimated by predictive equations (PE) but there is no specific algorithm for pregnant women. To this end, this study aimed to measure BMR (BMRm) in single-fetus primigravida 63 adolescent pregnant women recruited from primary health care units from a tropical municipality in Brazil. Additionally,

Usefulness of the basal metabolic rate in pregnancy

American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 1952
T HE basal metabolic rate in pregnancy has been the subject of considerable investigation since Magnus Levy’s first report in 1897. Interpretation and explanation of the findings, however, have been varied and remain controversial. Much of the work of the past was summarized by Javertl in 1940, with a graphic composite of the findings of Baer ...

BASAL METABOLIC RATE

Journal of the American Medical Association, 1956
To the Editor:— During the past 17 years we have done several thousand pulmonary function studies by spirometric methods and with these we have obtained as many determinations of the basal metabolic rate. Again and again we have noticed the tendency of the basal metabolic rate to be low when calculated by the "accepted" standards.

BASAL METABOLIC RATE IN OBESE CHILDREN

Pediatrics, 1949
An analysis of the results of 524 observations of the basal metabolism of 348 obese children is presented. Since only 3% of the basal metabolic rates were lower than minus 15% of the Child Research Council surface area-age standards, it is suggested that these standards can be used satisfactorily in the management of children with obesity.

The Zoogeography of Mammalian Basal Metabolic Rate

The American Naturalist, 2000
Zoogeographical effects on the basal metabolic rate (BMR) of 487 mammal species were analyzed using conventional and phylogenetically independent ANCOVA. Minimal BMR variance occurred at a "constrained body mass" of 358 g, whereas maximum variance occurred at the smallest and largest body masses.

On the “surface law” and basal metabolic rate

Journal of Theoretical Biology, 1981
Abstract It is shown on a theoretical basis that the existence of a “power law” relationship between body mass M and total metabolic heat generation rate Q of the form Q = kMα does not uniquely determine the dependence of metabolic rate on body temperature.

On structural theories of basal metabolic rate

Journal of Theoretical Biology, 1979
Abstract Because cells and organisms interface with the environment through surfaces, their design should be governed by surface laws. Yet, basal metabolic rate is not proportional to the 0·67-power of body mass (surface law) but to the 0·75-power of body mass.
