BASAL TEMPERATURE VERSUS BASAL METABOLISM

JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1942
Basal temperature is defined here as the body temperature taken under conditions which are usually considered as necessary for determining basal metabolism. That is to say, the individual should have had a good night's rest, no food for twelve hours and no exercise or excitement.

LOWERED BASAL METABOLISM

American Journal of Diseases of Children, 1933
In two previous papers one of us (Dr. Schick) and his co-workers 1 observed that in certain conditions characterized by a slow pulse, notably the postfebrile stage of infections, especially pneumonia, the slow pulse might be caused by a lowered basal metabolism rather than by stimulation of the vagus nerve.

BASAL METABOLIC RATE

Journal of the American Medical Association, 1956
To the Editor:— During the past 17 years we have done several thousand pulmonary function studies by spirometric methods and with these we have obtained as many determinations of the basal metabolic rate. Again and again we have noticed the tendency of the basal metabolic rate to be low when calculated by the "accepted" standards.

BASAL METABOLISM TESTS

Journal of the American Medical Association, 1939
To the Editor:— A common method of connecting the patient to apparatus for a basal metabolism test is by means of a rubber mouthpiece. The nose is closed by means of a nose clip. With some patients this works very well but with many patients with large or irregularly shaped nostrils the clip has to be made extremely tight and set just so or a leak ...

Cardiac basal and activation metabolism

1987
Cardiac basal metabolism is the rate of energy expenditure of the quiescent myocardium. It is species dependent and increases with pre-load. It has small contributions from membrane-bound cation pumps. The contribution of protein metabolism remains open to question. Calculations show that mitochondrial proton pumping may account for a large fraction of
