Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

K-Means-based isolation forest

open access: yesKnowledge-Based Systems, 2020
Abstract The task of anomaly detection in data is one of the main challenges in data science because of the wide plethora of applications and despite a spectrum of available methods. Unfortunately, many of anomaly detection schemes are still imperfect i.e., they are not effective enough or act in a non-intuitive way or they are focused on a specific ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Advancing seismic performance: Isolators, TMDs, and multi-level strategies in reinforced concrete buildings

open access: yesOpen Engineering
This study evaluates seismic mitigation methods, including high damping rubber bearing, lead rubber bearing, double sliding pendulum (DSP), and tuned mass damper (TMD), considering earthquake intensity, building height, and isolation level. Moreover, the

Metaheuristics-Based Optimization of a Control System Consisting of Underground Tuned Mass Dampers and Base Isolators for Seismic Structures

open access: yesGeoHazards
To reduce earthquake damage and its effect on the structures, tuned mass dampers (TMDs) are generally positioned on the top of the structures for effectiveness, but existing TMDs on the story levels have problems due to space and additional vertical load

Enhancing Friction Pendulum Isolation Systems Using Passive and Semi-Active Dampers

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2020
Friction pendulum systems (FPSs) are a common solution for isolating civil engineering structures under ground movements. The result is a base-isolated structure in which the base exhibits low shear stiffness in such a way that the input energy of the ...

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.

An isoform of 14‐3‐3 protein regulates transbilayer lipid movement at the plasma membrane

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Loss of 14‐3‐3ζ in CHO cells confers resistance to exogenous phosphatidylserine (PS) and impairs endocytosis‐independent inward flip‐flop of fluorescent PS at the plasma membrane. RNAi‐mediated knockdown reproduces this defect, while no additive effect is seen in ATP11C‐deficient cells.

Hybrid Passive Control Strategies for Reducing the Displacements at the Base of Seismic Isolated Structures

open access: yesFrontiers in Built Environment, 2019
In this paper, the use of hybrid passive control strategies to mitigate the seismic response of a base-isolated structure is examined. The control performance of three different types of devices used for reducing base displacements of isolated buildings ...
