Bax Crystal Structures Reveal How BH3 Domains Activate Bax and Nucleate Its Oligomerization to Induce Apoptosis

open access: yes, 2013
SummaryIn stressed cells, apoptosis ensues when Bcl-2 family members Bax or Bak oligomerize and permeabilize the mitochondrial outer membrane. Certain BH3-only relatives can directly activate them to mediate this pivotal, poorly understood step.

Machine Learning‐Enabled Prediction of pH‐Responsive Curcumin Release From Self‐Assembled Nanomicelles

open access: yesJournal of Applied Polymer Science, EarlyView.
Curcumin encapsulation in nanomicelles coupled with a machine learning–guided model for predicting its release profile. ABSTRACT This work, leveraging machine‐learning algorithms, focuses on the design and in vitro evaluation of oil‐in‐water surfactant‐based nanomicelles as a novel curcumin formulation with comparable cytotoxic effects against MCF‐7 ...

Immunohistochemical Evidence of Apoptosis in Different Cells of Hashimoto's Thyroiditis and Graves' Disease Thyroids

open access: yesEndocrinology Research and Practice, 2007
Objective: Hashimoto’s (HT) and Graves’ (GD) diseases are thyroid autoimmune diseases that share similar pathogenic mechanisms. Apoptosis is often related to an autoimmune process and is present in HT thyroid follicular cells.

Dietary Glutamine Supplementation Alleviated Rumen Epithelium Oxidative Damage and Apoptosis Induced by Feed Restriction via Maintaining Mitochondrial Homeostasis in Female Yaks

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, EarlyView.
Dietary glutamine (Gln) supplementation increased the ATP levels and promoted cell proliferation in the rumen epithelium of feed‐restricted yaks. Besides, Gln inhibited ROS accumulation and reduced oxidative damage and apoptosis in the rumen epithelium of feed‐restricted yaks.

Association of Bax expression and Bcl2/Bax ratio with clinical and molecular prognostic markers in chronic lymphocytic leukemia [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Medical Biochemistry, 2016
Background: In chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), in vivo apoptotic resistance of malignant B lymphocytes results, in part, from the intrinsic defects of their apoptotic machinery.

Upregulation of Bcl2 inhibits apoptosis-driven BAX insertion but favors BAX relocalization in mitochondria

open access: yes, 2010
Protein–protein interactions between the Bcl2 family proteins regulate apoptosis. An imbalance of this interaction network due to the upregulation of the proto-oncogene Bcl2 leads to a resistance to apoptosis associated with tumor formation.

Modulation of Animal Gut Health by Milk Oligosaccharide

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, EarlyView.
This review summarizes the composition and structural characteristics of MOs across different mammalian species, and elucidates their roles and mechanisms in maintaining intestinal homeostasis by regulating gut microbiome and enhancing intestinal chemical, physical and immune barriers.

RACK1 promotes Bax oligomerization and dissociates the interaction of Bax and Bcl-XL

open access: yes, 2010
Bax, a member of Bcl-2 family, plays an essential role in apoptotic pathways induced by a number of apoptotic stimulus. In a search for new potential binding partners of Bax, we identified the receptor for activated C-kinase 1 (RACK1) by a yeast two ...

What Makes an “Ideal” Cell Line for Recombinant Adeno‐Associated Virus Production?

open access: yesBiotechnology and Bioengineering, EarlyView.
Several host cell types have been used to produce rAAVs to date. Cell line‐specific traits that are beneficial in the context of rAAV manufacturing are reviewed here, with the goal of developing a consensus on the ‘ideal’ characteristics that an rAAV production host should possess (created with Biorender.com).
