The BCG Controversy

Tuberculosis can be entirely eliminated, and has been in certain areas, by tuberculin testing, x-raying reactors, and isolation of open cases. BCG would interfere with such programs and might add the danger of large numbers of subclinical tuberculosis among the population at large.

After vaccination with BCG (type Goeteborg) in the newborn period two children developed a BCG-osteomyelitis 12 and 19 months respectively later. The symptoms were only small. The nonspecific effects of BCG are not fully understood nevertheless, “trained immunity” and “heterologous lymphocyte responses” have been suggested. For instance, intravesical BCG therapy used for the treatment of bladder cancer, commonly causes minor side effects following treatment.
