A number of concepts using the principle of the refraction of light have been developed to steer light beams. Refractive beam steering concepts involve the use of optical wedges in order to deviate a light beam. This principle is ideally suited for steering laser light since dispersion is minimal due to the monochromatic nature of the laser.

2019 8th Asia-Pacific Conference on Antennas and Propagation (APCAP), 2019
To reduce a risk of damage from an exposure and the guarantee of a stable receive level, in case of the system of a wireless LAN, a printed type inverted F antenna for beam-steering is designed and its characteristic is measured. A parasitic element having the optimized length and interval is attached in both sides of the printed type inverted F ...

Electronic beam steering of shock waves
Ultrasound in Medicine & Biology, 1995Shock-wave generators are now currently used for the treatment of renal stones. In all these generators the focal zone is determined by their geometrical parameters. We propose, for the first time, a piezocomposite shock-wave generator with electronic focusing. The system is composed of a two-dimensional array and its electronic hardware.

Beam-steering antennas at millimeter wavelengths
Proceedings of 2012 5th Global Symposium on Millimeter-Waves, 2012In many emerging applications of millimeter waves, electronic focusing and beam steering is needed. We present a survey of mm-wave beam steering antennas, where the necessary phase change for antenna elements is achieved using various electronically tuneable elements, e.g.

Physics Antenna arrays have long been used for communication and sensing purposes. In the microwave and radio wavelength regime of the electromagnetic spectrum, arrays of antennas in which the phase and amplitude input to each element is varied can provide tailored beam profiles with controlled directionality.

Beam steering with a metasurface
Science, 2019Metasurfaces Metasurfaces have been designed that function as many passive optical elements. Shaltout et al. created a time-dependent active element. A frequency-comb light beam (a light source consisting of a broad range of evenly spaced wavelengths) interacted with a specially designed passive metasurface so that the beam could be rapidly (

Wideband plasmonic beam steering in metal gratings
Optics Letters, 2012We demonstrate controllable light deflection in thick metal gratings with periodic subwavelength slits filled with an active material. Under specific illumination conditions, the grating becomes nearly transparent and acts as a uniform optical phased-array antenna where the phase of the radiating elements is controlled by modifying the index of ...

Array imaging with beam-steered data
IEEE Transactions on Image Processing, 1992The author presents a system model and inversion for the beam-steered data obtained by linearly varying the relative phase among the elements of an array, also known as phased array scan data. The system model and inversion incorporate the radiation pattern of the array's elements.
