An ontology of mechanisms of action in behaviour change interventions [version 2; peer review: 2 approved]

open access: yesWellcome Open Research
Background Behaviour change interventions influence behaviour through causal processes called “mechanisms of action” (MoAs). Reports of such interventions and their evaluations often use inconsistent or ambiguous terminology, creating problems for ...

The CHARMS pilot study: a multi-method assessment of the feasibility of a sexual counselling implementation intervention in cardiac rehabilitation in Ireland

open access: yesPilot and Feasibility Studies, 2018
Background Many people living with cardiovascular disease (CVD) are affected by sexual problems associated with the condition. International guidelines recommend all patients with CVD should receive sexual counselling, yet this is rarely provided by ...

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Specifying and reporting complex behaviour change interventions: the need for a scientific method

open access: yes, 2009
Complex behaviour change interventions are not well described; when they are described, the terminology used is inconsistent. This constrains scientific replication, and limits the subsequent introduction of successful interventions.

Behaviour change for type 2 diabetes: perspectives of general practitioners, primary care academics, and behaviour change experts on the use of the 5As framework

open access: yes, 2022
BACKGROUND: The 5As framework is a recognized underpinning of behaviour change guidelines, teaching, and research in primary care. Supporting patients to improve their lifestyle behaviours, including diet and physical activity, is a common aspect of type

An ontological framework for organising and describing behaviours: The Human Behaviour Ontology [version 2; peer review: 1 approved, 2 approved with reservations]

open access: yesWellcome Open Research
Background Human behaviours have been classified in domains such as health, occupation and sustainability. We aimed to develop a broadly applicable behavioural framework to facilitate integrating evidence across domains.

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Personalizing travel behaviour change interventions using the trans-theoretical model and multimodality data [PDF]

open access: yes
Introduction Behaviourally informed soft policies, such as nudges, have become popular in areas like health, environment, and energy use as cost-effective instruments to change behaviour and decision-making. However, the effectiveness of soft policies in
