Flexural Performance of Glued Laminated Timber Beams Reinforced by the Cross-Section Increasing Method

open access: yesBuildings
This article addresses the problem of insufficient bearing capacity and stiffness in laminated timber beams during use and proposes a reinforcement method by increasing the cross-section.

Impact of air entrainment on the microstructure and mechanical performance of high performance mortar [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
At the Magnel Laboratory for Concrete Research an intensive vacuum mixer which can regulate the air pressure is available. As such the amount of entrapped air in cementitious materials can be varied.

A Numerical–Experimental Approach for Multi‐Matrix Fiber‐Reinforced Plastics Characterization Using Finite Element Model Updating

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A numerical–experimental framework is developed for characterizing multi‐matrix fiber‐reinforced polymers (MM‐FRPs) combining epoxy and polyurethane matrices. Harmonic bending tests are integrated with finite element model updating (FEMU) to simultaneously identify elastic and viscoelastic material parameters.

Curvature-induced stiffening of a fish fin [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
How fish modulate their fin stiffness during locomotive manoeuvres remains unknown. We show that changing the fin's curvature modulates its stiffness. Modelling the fin as bendable bony rays held together by a membrane, we deduce that fin curvature is ...

Deep learning improves performance of topological bending waveguides

open access: yesOptics Express
This study introduced design informatics using deep learning in a topological photonics system and applied it to a topological waveguide with a sharp bending structure to further reduce propagation loss. The sharp bend in the topological waveguide composed of two photonic crystals wherein dielectrics having C

Effect of Oxygen Content on Surface and Subsurface Integrity During Turning of Ti–6Al–4V

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study examines how oxygen content in the ambient atmosphere affects the surface and subsurface properties of Ti–6Al–4V during turning. Results show that oxygen does not influence surface roughness. However, machining in an extremely high vacuum‐adequate atmosphere increases surface hardness by up to 7.8% and induces compressive residual stresses ...

The study on bending performance of aluminum alloy honeycomb panel-beam composite grid structure

open access: yesMaterials Research Express, 2020
Long-span space structures are particularly sensitive to their self-weight. In this paper, a honeycomb plate with a high strength and light weight is reliably connected to a single-layer aluminium alloy lattice shell to form a new type of combined ...

Birefringence analysis of multilayer leaky cladding optical fibre [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
We analyse a multilayer leaky cladding (MLC) fibre using the finite element method and study the effect of the MLC on the bending loss and birefringence of two types of structures: (i) a circular core large-mode-area structure and (ii) an elliptical ...

Air‐Pressure–Actuated Vibroacoustic Metamaterial With Tunable Bandgap: Design, Modeling, and Characterization

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This article presents the design, modeling, and characterization of air‐pressure–actuated programmable vibroacoustic metamaterials (PVAMM). The study focuses on leveraging air pressure to dynamically tune resonance frequencies for effective noise attenuation.

Experimental and Finite Element Analysis of Bending Performance of Web-Embedded Double Inverted T-Shaped Steel–Concrete Composite Beams

open access: yesBuildings
This study investigates the bending performance of web-embedded double inverted T-shaped steel–concrete composite beams (WDTSCBs) through experimental testing and finite element analysis (FEA). A novel composite beam structure was developed, where double
