Measurement of bending properties of wood by compression bending tests

open access: yesJournal of Wood Science, 2001
We measured Young's modulus, proportional limit stress, and bending strength by the compression bending test and examined the applicability of the testing method by comparing it with conventional bending test methods. Long columns of todomatsu (Japanese fir,Abies sachalinensis Fr. Schmidt) with various length/thickness ratios were the specimens.

Shear bands and cracking of metallic glass plates in bending [PDF]

open access: yes, 1997
The thickness dependence of yielding and fracture of metallic glass plates subjected to bending is considered in terms of the shear band processes responsible for these properties.

The influence of tensile forces on the deflection of circular diaphragms in pressure sensors [PDF]

open access: yes, 1984
It is known that the deflection of a diaphragm is determined by two mechanisms, bending moments or bending stress and tensile forces or membrane stress.\ud \ud Usually the influence of tensile forces is not taken into account when calculating the ...

Evaluation of heating temperature and time on bending properties of Taurus cedar wood

open access: yesTurkish Journal of Forestry, 2021
Heat treatment is one of the environmentally friendly and cost-effective modification methods applied for improvements of wood properties. However, influences of exposure duration and temperature should be known to provide balanced improvements for ...

Inheritance of wood properties and their radial variations in full-sib families of 36-year-old Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi (Lamb.) Carr.)

open access: yesAnnals of Forest Science, 2023
Key message Larger differences of maximum load among families were found in mature wood compared to juvenile wood, suggesting the possibility of improving mature wood with higher resistance to rupture and maintaining characteristics of material in Larix ...

C2α‐carbanion‐protonating glutamate discloses tradeoffs between substrate accommodation and reaction rate in actinobacterial 2‐hydroxyacyl‐CoA lyase

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Enzymes of the 2‐hydroxyacyl‐CoA lyase group catalyze the condensation of formyl‐CoA with aldehydes or ketones. Thus, by structural adaptation of active sites, practically any pharmaceutically and industrially important 2‐hydroxyacid could be biotechnologically synthesized. Combining crystal structure analysis, active site mutations and kinetic assays,

In vivo measurement of mechanical impedance of bone [PDF]

open access: yes, 1974
System of measurement provides indications of ulnar properties independent of characteristics of surrounding soft tissue and other bones. Mechanical modal approximated ulnar response so average bending rigidity could be determined to provide direct index

Sharp-edged geometric obstacles in microfluidics promote deformability-based sorting of cells

open access: yes, 2019
Sorting cells based on their intrinsic properties is a highly desirable objective, since changes in cell deformability are often associated with various stress conditions and diseases. Deterministic lateral displacement (DLD) devices offer high precision

Mechanochemical Synthesis and Characterization of Nanostructured ErB4 and NdB4 Rare‐Earth Tetraborides

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, Volume 27, Issue 6, March 2025.
ErB4 and NdB4 nanostructured powders are produced by mechanochemical synthesis. 5 h mechanical alloying and 4 M HCl acid leaching are used in the production. ErB4 and NdB4 powders exhibit maximum magnetization of 0.4726 emu g−1 accompanied with an antiferromagnetic‐to‐paramagnetic phase transition at about TN = 18 K and 0.132 emu g−1 with a maximum at ...
