Mechanochemical Synthesis and Characterization of Nanostructured ErB4 and NdB4 Rare‐Earth Tetraborides

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, Volume 27, Issue 6, March 2025.
ErB4 and NdB4 nanostructured powders are produced by mechanochemical synthesis. 5 h mechanical alloying and 4 M HCl acid leaching are used in the production. ErB4 and NdB4 powders exhibit maximum magnetization of 0.4726 emu g−1 accompanied with an antiferromagnetic‐to‐paramagnetic phase transition at about TN = 18 K and 0.132 emu g−1 with a maximum at ...

Bistable Mechanisms 3D Printing for Mechanically Programmable Vibration Control

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work introduces a 3D‐printed bistable mechanism integrated into tuned mass dampers (TMDs) for mechanically adaptive passive vibration suppression. Through optimized geometry, the bistable design provides adaptable vibration reduction across a broad range of scenarios, achieving effective vibration mitigation without complex controls or external ...

Evaluation of the Potential of Laser Shock Peening Compared with Cold Expansion for Improving Fatigue Resistance of Riveted Lap Joints of Aerospace Grade 7175 Al Alloy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates laser shock peening for enhancing fatigue performance of riveted aerospace aluminum joints. A comparative approach with cold expansion combines fatigue testing and synchrotron X‐ray methods. Integrating mechanical testing with residual stress and strain characterization provides insights into how different treatments affect the ...

Bending Parameters in Heat Assisted Air Bending of High Strength Steels

open access: yesProcedia Manufacturing, 2020
Abstract The usage of high strength steels is a viable option for improving existing sheet metal constructions manufactured by air bending. This improvement can be achieved through increased payload, lighter structures or enlarged safety margins. Unfortunately, as these materials have limited cold formability, usually high strength steels cannot be ...

Adaptable Tile‐Based Pneumatic Origami through Structurally Coupled Localized Actuation

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This article presents tile‐based pneumatic origami structures with rigid tiles and flexible fabric creases, achieving adaptable properties including morphing shape, selective multistability, and tunable stiffness. Independently pressurized folding bladders at each crease enable structurally coupled localized actuation of origami structures.

Molecular Dynamics-Based Strength Estimates of Beta-Solenoid Proteins

open access: yes, 2017
The use of beta-solenoid proteins as functionalizable, nanoscale, self-assembling molecular building blocks may have many applications, including templating the growth of wires or higher-dimensional structures. By understanding their mechanical strengths,

Bending Fatigue Strength of Gears

open access: yesBulletin of JSME, 1966
In this paper, the authors investigated the mechanisms of bending fatigue breakage of gears in one side and reverse loading conditions by examining the change in microstructure and in magnitude of residual stress with the number of load cycles and proposed Na-Np diagram, in which the number of load cycles after reverse Na is plotted against the number ...

Multimodal Mechanical Testing of Additively Manufactured Ti6Al4V Lattice Structures: Compression, Bending, and Fatigue

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
In this experimental study, the mechanical properties of additively manufactured Ti‐6Al‐4V lattice structures of different geometries are characterized using compression, four point bending and fatigue testing. While TPMS designs show superior fatigue resistance, SplitP and Honeycomb lattice structures combine high stiffness and strength. The resulting

Study of the Mechanical Strength Improvement of Wafers for EWT Solar Cells by Chemical Etching after the Drilling Process [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Mechanical stability of EWT solar cells deteriorates when holes are created in the wafer. Nevertheless, the chemical etching after the hole generation process improves the mechanical strength by removing part of the damage produced in the drilling ...
