Testing the stability of the benefit transfer function for discrete choice contingent valuation data

open access: yes, 2007
We examine the stability of the benefit transfer function across 42 recreational forests in the British Isles. A working definition of reliable function transfer is put forward, and a suitable statistical test is provided.

The skills required for transition to university and study in biological sciences: A student perspective

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Bioscience students were asked for their opinions on the value and teaching of skills. 204 responded that teamwork, time management and study skills are necessary to reach University, that scientific writing, research, laboratory and presentation skills are taught effectively during their studies, while other skills are gained inherently through study ...

Suppression of lung adenocarcinoma migration through organelle alkalization by human lactoferrin – albumin fusion

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This paper reveals how human lactoferrin–albumin fusion (hLF‐HSA) potently suppresses lung adenocarcinoma cell migration. hLF‐HSA upregulates NHE7, leading to Golgi alkalization, disruption of the Golgi secretome, downregulation of MMP1, and reversal of EMT. These findings suggest a novel Golgi‐targeting strategy to suppress cancer cell migration.

Instruments of policy analysis. the impact assessment development by public authorities in Romania. Case study

open access: yes
The public authorities are facing real challenges due to the complexity and dynamics of economic and social issues. They must daily assess the available resources and answer to questions such as „is the citizens’ welfare good enough, can it be improved?”

Long‐term hippocampal alterations and cognitive impairment in a murine model of surgical sepsis

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Using a mouse model of surgical sepsis, we tested long‐term memory and analyzed the transcriptome of single cells isolated from the hippocampus. Survivor mice showed worse memory, loss of certain brain cell subpopulations, and abnormal immune cell activity—suggesting that post‐sepsis brain alterations may be linked to cognitive deficits.

How to make a Defined Benefit System Sustainable: The Sustainability Factor in the German Benefit Indexation Formula [PDF]

open access: yes
Two years after the "Riester reform" the German public pension system is once again in need of reform. The demographic and labor market assumptions underpinning the Riester reform have proved to be unrealistic.

Identifying gene expression signatures for risk stratification of postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy in colorectal cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
A novel signature integrating genome‐wide analysis with clinical factors predicts recurrence in stage II colorectal cancer and enables a new risk stratification to guide postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy. Clinical risk stratification for postoperative recurrence in patients with pathological stage II (pStage II) colorectal cancer (CRC) is essential ...

Derivation and characterization of retinal pigment epithelium from urine‐derived iPSCs

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Age‐related macular degeneration causes vision loss via RPE dysfunction and loss. Traditional iPSC therapies rely on invasive biopsies, limiting scalability. Here, we utilize urine‐derived stem cells as an accessible source to generate u‐iPSCs, successfully differentiated into pigmented RPE. This “Urine‐to‐Retina” platform provides a promising path for

Molecular dynamics simulations of positively selected codons in FcγRI reveal novel biochemical binding properties

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Evolutionary analysis across 32 placental mammals identified positive selection at residues H148 and W149 in the immune receptor FcγR1. Ancestral reconstruction combined with molecular dynamics simulations reveals how these mutations may influence receptor structure and dynamics, providing insight into the evolution of antibody recognition and immune ...

Evaluating uncertainties in an integrated approach for chemical risk assessment under REACH: more certain decisions?

open access: yes, 2009
This thesis concentrates on uncertainty and variability in the risk assessment methodology for industrial chemicals as applied within the current regulatory framework for industrial chemicals in Europe, REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and ...
