Excretion of benzo[a]pyrene-Gua adduct in the urine of benzo[a]pyrene-treated rats
Chemico-Biological Interactions, 1986A benzo[a]pyrene(BP)-Gua adduct was extracted in the urine of rats treated with BP. Some (0.15%) of the administered dose of BP was excreted as BP-Gua within 48 h. A double labelling experiment demonstrated that the excreted product contained both a BP and a Gua moiety.

Benzo[a]pyrene-collagen interactions
Chemico-Biological Interactions, 1983In vitro interactions of benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) with acid-soluble type I collagen from rat tail tendon have been investigated. The fluorescence of BaP increases in the presence of collagen. Bound BaP inhibits the formation of collagen fibrils in solution.

The occurrence and levels of benzo[a]pyrene in various heat-treated foods from China were evaluated by high-performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence detection. In a total of 119 samples, 105 were found to contain benzo[a]pyrene at levels of 0.03 to

Benzo[a]pyrene antibody inhibition of benzo[a]pyrene-induced mutagenesis
Cancer Letters, 1979Summary An antibody to benzo[ a ]pyrene (BP) was prepared. The isolated antibody showed a specificity for BP and a low reactivity with another carcinogenic hydrocarbon, 7,12-dimethylbenz[ a ] anthracene (DMBA). The BP-antibody inhibited the in vitro cytotoxic and mutagenic activity of BP in both a rat embryo fibroblast- and a rat lung cell-mediated ...

Risk assessment for benzo[a]pyrene
Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology, 1991Benzo[a]pyrene is the most studied carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon and one of the most potent, and it is often used as a toxicological prototype or surrogate for all carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Quantitative risk assessment of benzo[a]pyrene has been hampered by the quality of the data sets available for quantitation. The

Metabolism of Benzo(a)Pyrene and Benzo(a)Pyrene 4,5-Oxide in Rabbit Lung
1982For several years our laboratory has been investigating the biotransformation of various environmental pollutants by lung. Studies have been performed with pulmonary subcellular fractions, purified monooxygenase and glutathione transferase enzymes, and preparations having intact cellular structure including the isolated perfused lung and cell fractions

PHARMACOKINETICS OF BENZO[a]PYRENE IN THE RAT
Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health, Part A, 1998Groups of 4 male Wistar rats were dosed intravenously with 14C-labeled benzo[a]pyrene dissolved in an Emulphor/water vehicle at 3 different dose levels and killed at 1 of 15 specific time intervals from 5 min to 32 h after dosing. 14C-Radiolabel concentration-time data were obtained for blood, brain, adipose, heart, kidney, liver, lung, spleen, and ...

Wheat Bran and the Induction of Intestinal Benzo(a)pyrene Hydroxylase by Dietary Benzo(a)pyrene
The Journal of Nutrition, 1989The mucosa of the intestine responds to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) with the rapid induction of benzo(a)pyrene hydroxylase (BPH). Studies were conducted to determine if dietary fiber would reduce exposure of the intestine to dietary benzo(a)pyrene (BP) as indicated by intestinal BPH activity.

It is fifty years since the publication of the report on the isolation, from coal tar, and identification of the potent chemical carcinogen benzo(a)pyrene, the culmination of over 10 years of research instigated and directed by E.L. Kennaway. The events leading to that discovery are of interest in themselves.
