Ionic hydrogenation of benzofurans
Chemistry of Heterocyclic Compounds, 1975Benzofurans are arranged in the order 2-methylbenzofuran > 3-methylbenzofuran > benzofuran with respect to the case with which they undergo ionic hydrogenation. Benzofuran and 2-methylbenzofuran are protonated in the 3 position of the heterocyclic ring, whereas 3-methylbenzofuran is protonated in the 2 position.

Catalytic transformations of benzofuran
Chemistry of Heterocyclic Compounds, 1974When benzofuran is alkylated with tert-butyl chloride in the vapor phase (190–260‡C) in a flow system, the ratio of the 2- and 3-tert-butylbenzofurans formed varies from 2∶1 to 20∶1, depending on the acidity of the catalyst used (ZnCl2/Al2O3), because of conversion of the 3-isomer to the 2-isomer.

Benzofurans from 2-ethylphenols
Journal of Catalysis, 1969Abstract Substituted 2-ethylphenols when heated at or above 550 °C produce substituted benzofurans along with other products. 4-Methyl-, 4-ethyl-, 4,5-dimethyl, 4-fluoro-, 6-fluoro-, 4-chloro-, 6-chloro-, 4,6-dichloro-, and 4-bromo-2-ethylphenols gave the appropriately substituted benzofurans.
