[Biosynthesis of beta-endorphin].

We have demonstrated that beta-lipotropin is a precursor molecule and that during its maturation, it gives rise to beta-endorphin. This model is similar to proinsulin, proparathyroid hormone and proglucagon models. Since beta-endorphin is also found in the hypothalamus, one can foresee that its biosynthesis will be similar if not identical.

Beta-endorphin genetics in the etiology of alcoholism

"Reinforcing" effects are ascribed to endogenous opioids, particularly to the pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC)-derived beta-endorphin 1-31, the most potent opiate-active substance. Alcohol induces variations in the genetic processing of the precursor POMC and of beta-endorphin at different levels.

[Maternal beta-endorphin secretion during pregnancy--measurement of immunoreactive beta-endorphin in urine].

Gestational variations in maternal beta-endorphin (beta-end) secretion were investigated by simultaneous measurements of plasma and urinary immunoreactive beta-endorphin (ir-beta-end). Urinary ir-beta-end was extracted by using a Sep-Pak C18 column and was found to be stable for at least 24 hours at room temperature. Plasma and urine (2 hour collection)
