Abstract A 61‐year‐old man visited our hospital with a sudden onset of polydipsia and polyuria occurring 5 days prior, accompanied by a 5‐kg weight loss. Butyrate, a gut microbiota‐derived short‐chain fatty acid, enhances hippocampal long‐term potentiation in both sexes, while acetate and propionate have no effect. This enhancement is mediated via FFAR3 signalling in females but not males, revealing a sex‐specific mechanism linking microbial metabolites to synaptic plasticity.
