Response of an Infant With Presumed Multiple Acyl‐CoA Dehydrogenase Deficiency (MADD) to Ketone Supplementation

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Medical Genetics Part A, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Multiple Acyl‐CoA Dehydrogenase Deficiency (MADD) is an autosomal recessive inborn error of metabolism caused by biallelic pathogenic variants in one of three known genes: ETFA, ETFB, and ETFDH. It can cause multisystem dysfunction, including cardiomyopathy in severe cases.

D-beta-hydroxybutyrate extends lifespan in C. elegans

open access: yesAging, 2014
The ketone body beta-hydroxybutyrate (βHB) is a histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor and has been shown to be protective in many disease models, but its effects on aging are not well studied. Therefore we determined the effect of βHB supplementation on the lifespan ofC. elegans nematodes. βHB supplementation extended mean lifespan by approximately 20%.

Gut–Brain Axis Modulation by Short‐Chain Fatty Acids Exerts Disease‐Modifying Effects in a Murine Model of Drug‐Resistant Epilepsy

open access: yesAnnals of Neurology, EarlyView.
Objective Drug‐resistant epilepsy (DRE) remains a clinical challenge, as therapies modifying disease trajectory are lacking. Increasing evidence implicates gut microbiota dysbiosis in epilepsy pathophysiology, with short‐chain fatty acids (SCFAs) emerging as key microbial metabolites with neuroprotective and anti‐inflammatory properties.

Exercise Factors Released by the Liver, Muscle, and Bones Have Promising Therapeutic Potential for Stroke

open access: yesFrontiers in Neurology, 2021
Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and disability in the world. Stroke not only affects the patients, but also their families who serve as the primary caregivers.

Medium-Chain Fatty Acids, Beta-Hydroxybutyric Acid and Genetic Modulation of the Carnitine Shuttle Are Protective in a Drosophila Model of ALS Based on TDP-43

open access: yesFrontiers in Molecular Neuroscience, 2018
ALS patients exhibit dyslipidemia, hypermetabolism and weight loss; in addition, cellular energetics deficits have been detected prior to denervation. Although evidence that metabolism is altered in ALS is compelling, the mechanisms underlying metabolic ...

Designing PLA/PHBV Implants With Degradation Matched to Normal or Inflammatory Tissues

open access: yesJournal of Applied Polymer Science, EarlyView.
PLA/PHBV blends are investigated under simulated normal and pathological conditions. Multivariate statistical analysis decouples the competing effects of water‐uptake‐driven hydrolysis and crystallinity‐imposed barriers. Melt‐state rheological parameters serve as structural probes linking phase morphology to degradation kinetics. A semi‐empirical model

Indole‐3‐Acetic Acid Protects Bovine Hepatocytes Against Palmitic Acid‐Induced Lipid Accumulation and ER Stress Through SIRT3

open access: yesAnimal Research and One Health, EarlyView.
Cows with ketosis during the perinatal period often experience damage to the liver, a core metabolic organ, thereby exacerbating the disease's inherent vicious cycle. This study indicates that serum 3‐IAA concentrations were reduced in ketotic cows and show a significant negative correlation with hepatic TG content.

Fish Scales: A Multifunctional Biomaterial from Nature

open access: yesENERGY &ENVIRONMENTAL MATERIALS, EarlyView.
Fish scales demonstrate nature's solution to impact protection through overlapping multilayered architecture. This biological design combines mineralized surfaces with collagen networks to achieve both flexibility and fracture resistance. The structural principles inspire advanced protective materials and biomedical implants, where damage tolerance ...
