Addressing persistent challenges in digital image analysis of cancer tissue: resources developed from a hackathon

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Large multidimensional digital images of cancer tissue are becoming prolific, but many challenges exist to automatically extract relevant information from them using computational tools. We describe publicly available resources that have been developed jointly by expert and non‐expert computational biologists working together during a virtual hackathon

The pushed beta distribution and contaminated binary sampling [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
We examine a generalisation of the beta distribution that we call the pushed beta distribution. This is a continuous univariate distribution on the unit interval which generalises the beta distribution by "pushing" the density in a particular direction using an additional multiplicative term in the density kernel.

MET variants with activating N‐lobe mutations identified in hereditary papillary renal cell carcinomas still require ligand stimulation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
MET variants in the N‐lobe of the kinase domain, found in hereditary papillary renal cell carcinoma, require ligand stimulation to promote cell transformation, in contrast to other RTK variants. This suggests that HGF expression in the microenvironment is important for tumor growth in such patients. Their sensitivity to MET inhibitors opens the way for

Asymptotics of spacing distributions at the hard edge for $β$-ensembles [PDF]

open access: yesRMTA vol. 2, 1350002 (2013), 2012
In a previous work [J. Math. Phys. {\bf 35} (1994), 2539--2551], generalized hypergeometric functions have been used to a give a rigorous derivation of the large $s$ asymptotic form of the general $\beta > 0$ gap probability $E_\beta^{\rm hard}(0;(0,s);\beta a/2)$, provided both $\beta a /2 \in \mathbb Z_\ge 0$ and $2/\beta \in \mathbb Z^+$.

The beta generalized logistic distribution

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Probability and Statistics, 2013
For the first time, a four-parameter beta generalized logistic distribution is obtained by compounding the beta and generalized logistic distributions. The new model extends some well-known distributions and its shape is quite flexible, specially the skewness and the tail weights, due to the extra shape parameters.

Etoposide‐induced cancer cell death: roles of mitochondrial VDAC1 and calpain, and resistance mechanisms

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The complex mode of action of the topoisomerase II inhibitor etoposide in triggering apoptosis involves several mechanisms: overexpression of the mitochondrial protein VDAC1, leading to its oligomerization and formation of a large channel that mediates the release of pro‐apoptotic protein; and overexpression of the apoptosis regulators p53, Bax, and ...
