Cell surface nucleocapsid protein expression: A betacoronavirus immunomodulatory strategy

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2023
We recently reported that SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid (N) protein is abundantly expressed on the surface of both infected and neighboring uninfected cells, where it enables activation of Fc receptor-bearing immune cells with anti-N antibodies (Abs) and inhibits leukocyte chemotaxis by binding chemokines (CHKs).

Sub‐second heat inactivation of coronavirus using a betacoronavirus model [PDF]

open access: yesBiotechnology and Bioengineering, 2021
AbstractHeat treatment denatures viral proteins that comprise the virion, making the virus incapable of infecting a host. Coronavirus (CoV) virions contain single‐stranded RNA genomes with a lipid envelope and four proteins, three of which are associated with the lipid envelope and thus are thought to be easily denatured by heat or surfactant‐type ...

Group C Betacoronavirus in Bat Guano Fertilizer, Thailand [PDF]

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2013
To the Editor: Bats play a critical role in the transmission and origin of zoonotic diseases, primarily viral zoonoses associated with high case-fatality rates, including those caused by Nipah virus (NiV) and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)–like coronavirus (CoV) infections (1).

Novel Betacoronavirus in Dromedaries of the Middle East, 2013 [PDF]

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2014
In 2013, a novel betacoronavirus was identified in fecal samples from dromedaries in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Antibodies against the recombinant nucleocapsid protein of the virus, which we named dromedary camel coronavirus (DcCoV) UAE-HKU23, were detected in 52% of 59 dromedary serum samples tested.
