Aortic root abscess presenting as alternating bundle branch block: Infective endocarditis of bicuspid aortic valve

open access: yesIndian Heart Journal, 2015
Bicuspid aortic valve is the most common congenital cardiac malformation, affecting 1%–2% of the population. Among various complications, incidence of infective endocarditis (IE) in the bicuspid aortic valve population is high with higher rate of ...

Early stages of tooth development in the harbor porpoise Phocoena phocoena

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Here we describe the stages of tooth development in toothed whales on the basis of the harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena). The aim of the study was to find out whether these stages are identical to those of other mammals analyzed so far although toothed whales are homodont and monophyodont.

TAVR technique tries to go higher than bicuspid valve hurdles

open access: yes, 2018
Aortic stenosis developed in bicuspid valves is commonly characterized by a complex anatomy TAVR may be considered for high risk patients with bicuspid valve stenosis but procedure is usually technically challenging High (supra-annular) implantation of ...

Collegiate Wrestler With a Bicuspid Aortic Valve and Aortic Dilation

open access: yes, 2022
Bicuspid aortic valve and aortopathy are generally considered contraindications to isometric exercise. For athletes with mild disease at low risk of adverse events, a shared decision-making approach for continued sports participation is reasonable.

Different shape but the same topographical complexity—The lingual gross anatomy of the Saimaa (Pusa saimensis) and Baltic ringed seals (Pusa hispida botnica)

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Despite the distinctly different shapes of their tongues, the tongue gross anatomy of Saimaa ringed seal closely resembled that of Baltic ringed seal. There were no differences in the extrinsic and intrinsic tongue muscles or their associated vascularization and innervation between Saimaa and Baltic ringed seals.

Clinical and pathophysiological aspects of bicuspid aortic valve disease

open access: yes, 2019
A bicuspid aortic valve is not only a common congenital heart defect but also an enigmatic condition that can cause a large spectrum of diseases, such as aortic valve stenosis and severe heart failure in newborns whereas aortic dissection in adults.

Transcatheter Treatment of Bicuspid Aortic Valve Disease: Imaging and Interventional Considerations

open access: yesFrontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine, 2018
Patients with bicuspid aortic valve disease have systematically been excluded from large randomized clinical trials investigating transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) due to their younger age, lower surgical risk and complex aortic anatomy. The

Bicuspid aortic valve is heritable

open access: yesJournal of the American College of Cardiology, 2004
Previous studies have established familial clustering of bicuspid aortic valve (BAV), presumably indicating genetic inheritance. Our objective was to statistically test whether the segregation pattern of BAV is consistent with genetic inheritance and to obtain an estimate of the size of the genetic effect (heritability).Bicuspid aortic valve occurs in ...

Cardiac morphological and morphometric analysis of Ardea alba

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Ardea alba (Linnaeus, 1758) is a widely distributed heron species whose cardiovascular morphology remains poorly described. This study aimed to characterize the cardiac morphology and morphometry of adult A. alba. Ten specimens were analyzed using radiographic, morphometric, histological, scanning electron microscopy, and three‐dimensional ...
