Evolution of Close Binary Systems [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2005
We collected data on the masses, radii, etc. of three classes of close binary stars: low-temperature contact binaries (LTCBs), near-contact binaries (NCBs), and detached close binaries (DCBs). They restrict themselves to systems where (1) both components are, at least arguably, near the Main Sequence, (2) the periods are less than a day, and (3) there ...

Activity of relatively close binaries [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Astronomical Union Colloquium, 1991
AbstractWhereas the rotation-activity relationship for single cool stars can be described in terms of fundamental stellar properties, the activity in relatively close binaries is enhanced with respect to that of single stars by an amount which depends strongly on the properties of the companion.

Close binary system GO Cyg [PDF]

open access: yesNew Astronomy, 2012
In this study, we present long term photometric variations of the close binary system \astrobj{GO Cyg}. Modelling of the system shows that the primary is filling Roche lobe and the secondary of the system is almost filling its Roche lobe. The physical parameters of the system are $M_1 = 3.0\pm0.2 M_{\odot}$, $M_2 = 1.3 \pm 0.1 M_{\odot}$, $R_1 = 2.50 ...

NONLINEAR TIDES IN CLOSE BINARY SYSTEMS [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2012
40 pages, 16 figures. Matches version published in ApJ; conclusions unchanged; some restructuring of sections; sect. 5 now provides simple physical estimates of the nonlinear growth rates that agree well with the detailed calculations given in the ...

CLOSE BINARY PROGENITORS OF HYPERNOVAE [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Modern Physics: Conference Series, 2012
In this paper we propose a new plausible mechanism of supernova explosions specific to close binary systems. The starting point is the common envelope phase in the evolution of a binary consisting of a red super giant and a neutron star. As the neutron star spirals towards the center of its companion it spins up via disk accretion.

Asteroseismology of Close Binary Stars [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the International Astronomical Union, 2006
AbstractIn this review paper, we summarise the goals of asteroseismic studies of close binary stars. We first briefly recall the basic principles of asteroseismology, and highlight how the binarity of a star can be an asset, but also a complication, for the interpretation of the stellar oscillations.

Statistical Models for Close Binaries [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Astronomical Union Colloquium, 1982
AbstractStatistical models for binaries as a vhole were selected; then statistical properties of close binaries -the proportions of spectroscopic and eclipsing binaries and the distributions of the K velocities and of the depths of eclipse- were computed for each model.

Massive close binaries: Observational characteristics [PDF]

open access: yesSpace Science Reviews, 1993
Theoretically predicted evolutionary phases of massive close binaries are compared with the observations. For the evolution up to the High-Mass X-ray Binary (HMXB) phase there is fair agreement between theory and observation. Beyond the HMXB phase there is much uncertainty.
