Choroidal binarization analysis: clinical application

open access: yesInternational Ophthalmology, 2019
Image processing of optical coherence tomography scans through binarization techniques represent a non-invasive way to separately asses and measure choroidal components, in vivo. In this review, we systematically search the scientific literature regarding binarization studies published so far.A systematic research was conducted at PubMed database ...

Informative frailty indices from binarized biomarkers [PDF]

open access: yesBiogerontology, 2020
AbstractFrailty indices (FI) based on continuous valued health data, such as obtained from blood and urine tests, have been shown to be predictive of adverse health outcomes. However, creating FI from such biomarker data requires a binarization treatment that is difficult to standardize across studies.

Implementation of Drug‐Induced Rhabdomyolysis and Acute Kidney Injury in Microphysiological System

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A modular Muscle–Kidney proximal tubule‐on‐a‐chip integrates 3D skeletal muscle and renal proximal tubule tissues to model drug‐induced rhabdomyolysis and acute kidney injury. The coculture system enables dynamic tissue interaction, functional contraction monitoring, and quantification of nephrotoxicity, revealing drug side effect‐induced metabolic ...

Algorithm to Estimate Oil Spill Area Using Digital Properties of Image

open access: yes한국해양공학회지, 2020
Oil spill accidents at sea result in a wide range of damages, including the destruction of ocean environments and ecosystems, as well as human illnesses by the generation of harmful gases caused by phase changes in crude oil. When an oil spill occurs, an

Adaptive Binarization for Weakly Supervised Affordance Segmentation

open access: yes, 2017
The concept of affordance is important to understand the relevance of object parts for a certain functional interaction. Affordance types generalize across object categories and are not mutually exclusive.

A Vascular Microphysiological Model of Lung Fibrosis Reveals That Myofibroblasts and IPF Patient‐Derived Fibroblasts Impair Angiogenesis and Vasculogenesis

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A microphysiological lung fibrosis model recapitulates myofibroblast–vascular interactions. Induced myofibroblasts and patient‐derived IPF fibroblasts impair angiogenesis and increase vascular permeability via TGF‐β1–driven signaling. Pharmacological interventions with SB 431542 and VEGF supplementation restore vascular morphology and barrier function.

Optimizing an image analysis protocol for ocean particles in focused shadowgraph imaging systems

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
A variety of imaging systems are in use in oceanographic surveys, and the opto-mechanical configurations have become highly sophisticated. However, much less consideration has been given to the accurate reconstruction of imaging data.

Training Multi-Bit Quantized and Binarized Networks with a Learnable Symmetric Quantizer

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2021
Quantizing weights and activations of deep neural networks is essential for deploying them in resource-constrained devices, or cloud platforms for at-scale services.

Impact Ejecta near the Impact Point Observed using Ultra-high-speed Imaging and SPH Simulations, and a Comparison of the Two Methods

open access: yes, 2020
High-speed impact ejecta at velocities comparable to the impact velocity are expected to contribute to material transport between planetary bodies and deposition of ejecta far from the impact crater.

Compression‐Tension‐Asymmetry and Stiffness Nonlinearity of Collagen‐Matrigel Composite Hydrogels

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Self‐assembled collagen hydrogel matrices are widely used in tissue engineering applications. These matrices stiffen and contract laterally under tension due to fiber alignment and soften and collapse under compression due to fiber buckling. It is demonstrated that filler materials, such as Matrigel, linearize the mechanical behavior of collagen ...
