Canopy position and tree size structure the distribution of honeydew‐producing scale insects (Hemiptera: Coccoidea) in a temperate hardwood forest

open access: yesEcological Entomology, EarlyView.
Scale insect abundance peaked in the upper canopy of sugar maples. Parthenolecanium peaked on older internodes; Lepidosaphes on the current leader. Internodes longer than the previous carried more scales; wider ones fewer. Abstract Forest canopies are vertically stratified habitats in which microclimate and host tissue quality vary with height.

Thinning and the law of small numbers

open access: yes, 2007
The "thinning" operation on a discrete random variable is the natural discrete analog of scaling a continuous variable, i.e., multiplying it by a constant.

Life Cycle Consumption and Portfolio Choice Under Real Interest Rate Risk

open access: yesFinancial Management, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT We set up a life cycle model with real interest rate risk to demonstrate that real interest rates have implications for optimal household consumption and investments. Lower interest rates lead to higher optimal stock investments and lower consumption.

Biophysical Factors Controlling Spatiotemporal Variability in Fishes' Early Life History Distribution in the Kattegat Ecosystem

open access: yesFisheries Oceanography, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The Kattegat Sea acts as a nursery area for several fishes, exhibiting complex ichthyoplankton dynamics influenced by environmental factors and species‐specific traits. We investigated factors influencing spatiotemporal variability in yolk‐sac larvae presence and areal density for three economically and ecologically important fishes: sandeel ...

Weathering the Storm: Effects of a Hurricane‐Induced Thermal Disturbance on a Juvenile Atlantic Halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus) Hotspot in Nova Scotia, Canada

open access: yesFisheries Oceanography, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Atlantic Halibut has recently become the most valuable groundfish in Atlantic Canada following population recovery, and the benthic habitat characteristics of their aggregation areas have been identified as a key outstanding ecological knowledge gap for the species. In 2022, during a multi‐year acoustic tracking study in a key juvenile hotspot

Under the cover of darkness: Foraging behaviour increases on cloudy, new moon nights in a pelagic seabird

open access: yesIbis, EarlyView.
While many visual predators feed exclusively during the day, others exploit foraging opportunities at night, although the efficiency with which they do so is strongly influenced by ambient light levels. We investigated the influence of variation in nocturnal light on the foraging behaviour of a small pelagic seabird, the European Storm‐petrel ...

Dietary selectivity mediates niche overlap and interspecific competition in a reedbed warbler community in southern Europe

open access: yesIbis, EarlyView.
Sympatric species are expected to use resources differently along one or more ecological dimensions. This can be complex when there is partial separation along multiple dimensions, such as where bird species exhibit similarities in habitat use and diet.
