Brazil is the largest producer of bioethanol, and sugarcane is the main raw material. Bioethanol is produced by both batch and continuous processes, and in some cases, flocculating yeast is used. This article analyzes the Brazilian Ethanol Program. For the 1996-1997 harvest, Brazil produced 14.16 billion L of ethanol and 13.8 million metric t of sugar,

Bioethanol and diesel/bioethanol blends emissions abatement
Fuel, 2008Oxygenated diesel fuel blends have a potential to reduce the emission of particulate matter (PM) and to be an alternative to diesel fuel. This paper shows that pre-sulfated 1%Pt/γ-Al2O3 and pre-sulfated 1%Pt–2%Sn/γ-Al2O3 are very active at PM emissions abatement when, bioethanol or diesel/bioethanol are used as fuels.

Production of bioethanol from cellulosic biomass plays an important role to support energy policies. To produce cellulosic ethanol via fermentation it is required to first break the lignocellulosic complex. Numerous technologies for such pretreatment are under development or in a pilot plant stage.

Bioethanol production processes vary considerably depending on the raw material involved, but some of the main stages in the process remain the same, even though they take place in different conditions of temperature and pressure, and they sometimes involve different microorganisms.

The future of bioethanol appears to be bright as the need for renewable energy sources to replace dependence on foreign oil is in high demand. With many nations seeking to reduce petroleum imports, boost rural economies, and improve air quality, world ethanol production rose to 13,300 million gallons in 2012.
