Bioimpedance analysis: Should it be used in morbid obesity?

American Journal of Human Biology, 2011
AbstractObjectives:Questions about reliability of bioimpedance analysis (BIA) in morbidly obese subjects have curtailed its use in this setting, but metabolic implications might reignite the debate. In a prospective study, it was aimed to analyze anthropometric and clinical associations. Methods:Bariatric candidates (n = 94) with or without metabolic ...

Bioimpedance For Analysis of Body Composition in Sports

Journal of Medical Device Technology, 2023
Phase angle (PhA), a bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) parameter, has proven to be a proxy of body cell mass in athletes, but very few data are available on its segmental evaluation (upper and lower limbs). Therefore, the aim of this study is to assess whether whole-body and segmental PhA varied among elite male athletes of different sports and ...

Fourier Analysis of Human Finger Bioimpedance Variances

Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine, 2010
Fourier analysis was employed to determine the amplitudes of spectrum components of small variations of electrical resistance (bioimpedance) in human finger recorded using an original hardware-software complex. It revealed periodic bioimpedance oscillations at the frequencies of heartbeats, respiration, and Mayer wave (0.1 Hz).

An efficient analysis of nanomaterial cytotoxicity based on bioimpedance

Nanotechnology, 2010
In the emerging nanotechnology field, there is an urgent need for the development of a significant and sensitive method that can be used to analyse and compare the cytotoxicities of nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), since such materials can be applied as contrast agents or drug delivery carriers.

Localized bioimpedance analysis in the evaluation of neuromuscular disease

Muscle & Nerve, 2002
AbstractLocalized bioimpedance analysis is a novel, noninvasive technique with potential application to neuromuscular disease. In this procedure, high‐frequency alternating current is passed through muscle, and parameters related to the consequent voltage pattern are evaluated.

Clinical utility of bioimpedance analysis in liver cirrhosis

Journal of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Sciences, 2017
AbstractBackgroundThe objective of the present study was to examine the impact of muscle mass depletion (MMD) as determined by data in bioimpedance analysis (BIA) in liver cirrhosis (LC) patients (n = 382, 204 in male and 178 in female) on survival and to validate the utility of cutoff values in BIA recommended from current recommendations ...

[Bioimpedance analysis in medicine].

Patologicheskaia fiziologiia i eksperimental'naia terapiia, 2014
This review covers the problems of using of bioimpedancemetry in medicine. This method is currently becoming more widely used for diagnostics of various pathological disorders. The advantages and disadvantages of non-invasive and invasive bioelectrical impedance analysis were described.

Bioimpedance vector analysis as a measure of muscle function

Clinical Nutrition, 2009
The impedance vector produced by an alternating current in the bioimpedance analysis can be seen as a standardised test of cellular mass and function since reactance is believed to reflect the mass and integrity of cell membranes. This study investigated the association between resistance and reactance normalised for height (R/H and Xc/H), and muscle ...

Design and uncertainty analysis of a bioimpedance measurement channel

2013 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (I2MTC), 2013
This work presents the design and uncertainty analysis of a bioimpedance measurement channel for use in electrical impedance tomography (EIT). A bioimpedance measurement channel was designed. Then the random error of each stage of the project as well as the entire channel was measured. The loads used were resistive, in the range of 100 Ω -1K Ω.

A comparison of the whole-body and segmental methodologies of bioimpedance analysis

Acta Diabetologica, 2003
Theory supports the use of a segmental methodology (SM) for bioimpedance analysis (BIA) of body water (BW). However, previous studies have generally failed to show a significant improvement when the SM is used in place of a whole-body methodology. A pilot study was conducted to compare the two methodologies in control and overweight subjects.
