Research progress on the physiological metabolic mechanisms and distribution in water treatment systems of ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms

open access: yesGongye shui chuli
Nitrification and denitrification processes play crucial roles in biological nitrogen removal in water treatment systems. The ammonia oxidation in nitrification is the rate-limiting process, which converts low-valent ammonia-nitrogen into high-valent ...

Kinetics of nitrogen removal processes in constructed wetlands

open access: yesE3S Web of Conferences, 2018
The aim of this paper is to present a state-of-the-art review of the kinetics of nitrogen removal in constructed wetlands. Biological processes of nitrogen removal from wastewater can be described using equations and kinetic models.

Transcriptomics reveals the effect of ammonia nitrogen concentration on Pseudomonas stutzeri F2 assimilation and the analysis of amtB function

open access: yesSynthetic and Systems Biotechnology, 2023
The biological treatment of wastewater with high concentrations of ammonia nitrogen has become a hot research issue, but there are limited reports on the mechanism of ammonia nitrogen utilization by microorganisms.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Thermophilic biological nitrogen removal in industrial wastewater treatment

open access: yesApplied Microbiology and Biotechnology, 2013
Nitrification is an integral part of biological nitrogen removal processes and usually the limiting step in wastewater treatment systems. Since nitrification is often considered not feasible at temperatures higher than 40 °C, warm industrial effluents (with operating temperatures higher than 40 °C) need to be cooled down prior to biological treatment ...

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Effect of organic matters on anammox coupled denitrification system: when nitrite was sufficient [PDF]

open access: yesRoyal Society Open Science, 2019
Anaerobic ammonia oxidation (anammox) and denitrification can work together to weaken the influence of organic matter on anaerobic ammonia oxidation bacteria (AAOB) and improve nitrogen removal performance.

Comparison of hybrid membrane aerated biofilm reactor (MABR)/suspended growth and conventional biological nutrient removal processes

open access: yesWater Science and Technology, 2021
Mathematical modelling was used to investigate the possibility to use membrane aerated biofilm reactors (MABRs) in a largely anoxic suspended growth bioreactor to produce the nitrate-nitrogen required for heterotrophic denitrification and the growth of ...

A membrane bioreactor for an innovative biological nitrogen removal process

open access: yesWater Science and Technology, 2010
A hybrid system has been developed for biological nitrogen removal through nitrification-denitrification. The system includes an aerobic tank and an anoxic tank with an intermediate sludge settler connected to a membrane bioreactor (MBR) with a submerged 0.4 μm hollow-fiber membrane module.

Salmonella lipopolysaccharide‐containing supported lipid bilayers as platforms to study bacteriophage interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...
