Fuzzy predictive control for nitrogen removal in biological wastewater treatment

open access: yesWater Science and Technology, 2002
Whenever the carbon/nitrogen ratio of a domestic wastewater is too low, full denitrification is difficult to obtain and an additional source of organic carbon has to be provided. Since loading conditions may vary appreciably over the diurnal cycle, depending on the weather and sewage conditions, dosing should be controlled by an adaptive regulator to ...

ZW4864‐mediated inhibition of the β‐catenin/BCL9/BCL9L complex reveals therapeutic potential in bladder cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
BCL9 and BCL9L drive bladder cancer progression by enhancing β‐catenin signaling, promoting proliferation, migration, invasion, and organoid growth. Genetic depletion of BCL9(L) suppresses malignant phenotypes, while pharmacological disruption of the β‐catenin/BCL9(L) complex with ZW4864 inhibits canonical Wnt signaling and tumor‐associated cellular ...

Methodology for minimum nitrogen compounds removal efficiencies estimation and wastewater treatment systems pre-selection: a watershed approach

open access: yesRBRH, 2019
Nitrogen is a very important parameter for water pollution control since nitrification implies in aquatic environment oxygen consumption and some nitrogen forms are toxic.

Epigenetic silencing of the liver‐specific lncRNA LUNAR promotes liver cancer progression via NOTCH activation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
LUNAR is a liver‐specific long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) that is highly expressed in normal liver but becomes epigenetically silenced in hepatocellular carcinoma through promoter hypermethylation. Loss of LUNAR is associated with NOTCH activation, epithelial–mesenchymal transition, and metastasis, whereas restoring LUNAR restrains metastatic progression ...

A proposed nomenclature for biological processes that remove nitrogen

open access: yesEnvironmental Science: Water Research & Technology, 2017
A consistent terminology is proposed to resolve present inconsistencies and to facilitate distinct communication about biological nitrogen removal processes.

Single‐molecule DNA flow‐stretch assays for high‐throughput DNA–protein interaction studies

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We describe an optimised single‐molecule DNA flow‐stretch assay that visualises DNA–protein interactions in real time. Linear DNA fragments are tethered to a surface and stretched by buffer flow for fluorescence imaging. Using λ and φX174 DNA, this protocol enhances reproducibility and accessibility, providing a versatile approach for studying diverse ...

Nitrogen and biological phosphorus removal in submerged biofilters

open access: yesWater Science and Technology, 1994
An operational procedure is presented which enables biological phosphorus removal to be performed using a set of five submerged high rate biofilters. The new process was developed using an upflow biofilter with floating filter media, originally conceived to perform nitrification and denitrification of wastewaters (Biostyr-ND). Anaerobic contact periods

YIPFα1A expression is regulated by multilayered molecular mechanisms

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
YIPFα1A, a five‐pass Golgi protein, is regulated at multiple layers. (1) Rare‐codon enrichment drives translation‐coupled mRNA decay. (2) A proximal 3′‐UTR element stabilizes mRNA. (3) A distal 3′‐UTR element included by alternate poly(A) site usage represses translation, which can be overridden by the proximal 3′‐UTR element.

Characteristics and transformations of dissolved organic nitrogen in municipal biological nitrogen removal wastewater treatment plants

open access: yesEnvironmental Research Letters, 2013
Dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) represents most of the dissolved nitrogen in the effluent of biological nitrogen removal (BNR) wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The characteristics of wastewater-derived DON in two different WWTPs were investigated by
