A measure of time value for living species, a natural discount rate, is proposed. It is the rate at which a species reveals its progressive disregard of the importance of future events. The discount rate is shown to be equal to the average (standard) metabolic rate for the species at a steady-state condition.

Receptor Theory and Biological Constraints on Value
Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 2007Abstract: Modern economic theories of value derive from expected utility theory. Behavioral evidence points strongly toward departures from linear value weighting, which has given rise to alternative formulations that include prospect theory and rank‐dependent utility theory.

The value and pitfalls of biologics registries for psoriasis
British Journal of Dermatology, 2017We are pleased that our initial perspective article in the BJD have sparked discussions. As indicated in our initial paper, our main critical point is the exponential growth in publications relating to drug survival as an efficacy assessment based on non-randomized registry data (Figure 1).

The value of parasitoids in biological control
New Zealand Journal of Zoology, 1994Abstract During the last 10 years there has been increasing concern about the dangers of ill‐advised introductions of biological control agents. Once an exotic species has established, its effects are difficult to predict and are irreversible.

A perspective on biological monitoring guidance values
Toxicology Letters, 2014Biological monitoring (BM) is a useful tool for exposure assessment of substances that can be absorbed through the skin or where control relies on respiratory protection. This commentary briefly describes the various types of biological monitoring guidance values (BMGVs) that are available to help interpret BM results.

American health & drug benefits, 2014
American Health & Drug Benefits™ has reached out to a health and drug benefit decision maker to open a dialogue on the benefits coverage implications surrounding the high cost of biologic drugs. We asked Dr. Gary Owens to discuss with us how payors are turning data points, demographic trends, and pharmacologic discoveries into formularies and benefit ...

Inherent biological variation and reference values
Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (CCLM), 2004AbstractThere is a need for revisiting theoretical concepts and practical applications of conventional population-based reference values to make for better clinical use of laboratory data. Knowledge of the underlying biological variation of quantities examined in medical laboratories is vital to understanding the proper generation and application of ...

[The biological value of fats].
Die Nahrung, 1978Integral characteristics of animal development (weight increase, maturing of biological systems) used to date are not adequate to the requirements of detailed biological evaluation of dietary fats. The linoleic acid content in the dietary fat and the eicosatrienoic acid - eicosatetraenoic acid ratio (20:3/20:4 = HOLMAN coefficient) in the organism ...

A Biological Prologue for Human Values
BioScience, 1968seemingly contradictory approaches are the concern of one and the same person who does the thinking. One is faced here by some of the deeper questions involving the cosmic relations of human nature, in an area to which biological perspectives are competent to contribute.
