Sepsis is the most frequent cause of death in non-coronary intensive care units (ICUs). In the past 10 years, progress has been made in the early identification of septic patients and in their treatment and these improvements in support and therapy mean that the mortality is gradually decreasing but it still remains unacceptably high.

Earthworms are believed to be so-called key species within ecosystems and are often exposed to a wide range of anthropogenic compounds released to the terrestrial environment. As a consequence, they may suffer from the toxicity of these compounds. For these and other reasons, earthworms have been used extensively in ecotoxicological studies.

Aggressive behavior exerts an enormous impact on society remaining among the main causes of worldwide premature death. Effective primary interventions, relying on predictive models of aggression that show adequate sensitivity and specificity are currently lacking.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease is characterized by an abnormal inflammatory response of the lungs to noxious particles and gases, caused primarily by cigarette smoking. Although COPD affects the lung, it also produces significant systemic consequences.

A biomarker is a characteristic by which a (patho)physiologic process can be identified. Biomarkers can be of diagnostic value (to discriminate infection from noninfectious conditions or to determine the causative pathogen), of prognostic value (assigning risk profiles and predict outcome), and in the future may be of theranostic value (aid in ...

Plants can react rapidly to adverse environmental conditions ranging from invisible biochemical processes up to the development of visible symptoms of injury, independent of the primary target of the stress the best recognized in leaves in the field. Biochemical biomarkers may be very specific for one or a group of compounds or a general indication of ...

Journal of Frailty & Aging, 2015
Expanding the concept of frailty to the clinical settings has raised the concern about the accuracy of the current definitions for identifying frail individuals (not populations). The usual tools to assess frailty show, among other characteristics, a low sensitivity and a low Positive Predictive Value.
