Tuber and Root Starches: Molecular and Physicochemical Properties

open access: yesStarch - Stärke, Volume 78, Issue 2, February 2026.
Dale dale, Mashua, and Pituca starches exhibited distinct amorphous and ordered structural regions. Among them, Dale dale starch showed the highest degree of crystallinity. ABSTRACT Starches extracted from different botanical sources can be used in a wide range of food applications; however, understanding the relationships among their properties is ...

Physiological roles of lignins – tuning cell wall hygroscopy and biomechanics

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 248, Issue 6, Page 2674-2706, December 2025.
Summary Lignins constitute the second most abundant carbon‐storing biopolymers in the biosphere. These phenolic polymers accumulate in different concentrations, compositions, and localisations within and between cell wall layers and cell types. Lignins were acquired during plant terrestrialisation 450 million years ago, and the diversification of their

Performance of Carboxymethyl Starch and Chitosan as Green Scale Inhibitors for Calcite and Gypsum Precipitation

open access: yesChemistrySelect, Volume 10, Issue 21, June 4, 2025.
Carboxymethylated chitosan (CMCh) and starch (CMSt) were evaluated as eco‐friendly scale inhibitors. Static tests demonstrated 50%–95% CaSO₄ inhibition, whereas dynamic tests against CaCO₃ showed MICs of 20–40 ppm (CMCh) and 10 ppm (CMSt). Both biopolymers exhibited calcium compatibility and altered crystal morphologies, confirming their potential as ...
