Status and distribution changes of the endangered Green Peafowl (Pavo muticus) in China over the past three decades (1990s‒2017)

open access: yesAvian Research, 2018
Background Understanding the changes in population dynamics, including demographics, distribution and threats, is essential for species status assessing.

Phylogenomics of white-eyes, a ‘great speciator’, reveals Indonesian archipelago as the center of lineage diversity

open access: yeseLife, 2020
Archipelagoes serve as important ‘natural laboratories’ which facilitate the study of island radiations and contribute to the understanding of evolutionary processes. The white-eye genus Zosterops is a classical example of a ‘great speciator’, comprising

Vision‐Assisted Avocado Harvesting with Aerial Bimanual Manipulation

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This work outlines the design and implementation of a bimanual aerial robot that employs visual perception and learning to detect, reach, and harvest avocados. A new gripper and fixer arm assembly is used to harvest avocados, while visual perception enables the detection of avocados and estimation of their position and orientation for determining ...

Cellularity of adipose depots in the genetically obese Zucker rat

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1971
Cell size and number of three adipose depots, epididymal, retroperitoneal, and subcutaneous, were determined during growth of the obese Zucker rat (“fatty”) and nonobese Zucker control.

Information Transmission Strategies for Self‐Organized Robotic Aggregation

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
In this review, we discuss how information transmission influences the neighbor‐based self‐organized aggregation of swarm robots. We focus specifically on local interactions regarding information transfer and categorize previous studies based on the functions of the information exchanged.

Extreme migratory connectivity and apparent mirroring of non-breeding grounds conditions in a severely declining breeding population of an Afro-Palearctic migratory bird

open access: yesScientific Reports
Understanding the distribution of breeding populations of migratory animals in the non-breeding period (migratory connectivity) is important for understanding their response to environmental change.

Black-backed Woodpecker occupancy is extensive in green conifer forests of the southern Cascade Mountains, Oregon

open access: yesAvian Conservation and Ecology, 2021
Black-backed Woodpeckers (Picoides arcticus) are widely considered a burned forest specialist across much of their range. Several recent studies have examined their occurrence in "green" coniferous forests that have not been recently burned, but Black ...

Collision‐Resilient Winged Drones Enabled by Tensegrity Structures

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Based on structures of birds such as the woodpeck, this article presents the collision‐resilient aerial robot, SWIFT. SWIFT leverages tensegrity structures in the fuselage and wings which allow it to undergo large deformations in a crash, without sustaining damage. Experiments show that SWIFT can reduce impact forces by 70% over conventional structures.

Monitoring at management scales: Multi‐scale trend estimates for bird populations in the western United States

open access: yesEcosphere
Widespread declines in North American birds have elevated the need for proactive conservation planning and delivery to promote recovery. Long‐term monitoring at large spatial and temporal extents has been critical to identifying declines, but there is ...
