Mistletoe‐ and Mussel‐Inspired Fabrication of Hierarchically Structured Protein‐Cellulose Scaffolds From Biomolecular Condensates

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Merging materials processing tricks inspired by mussel and mistletoe fiber fabrication, solutions of cationic mussel byssus proteins were mixed with modified anionic nanocrystalline cellulose, producing distinctive core‐shell condensates. Simple processing of condensate suspensions using freeze‐drying produced hierarchically structured porous protein ...

Using microstructures and composition to decipher the alterations of rodent teeth in modern regurgitation pellets—a good news-bad news story

open access: yes, 2020
Rodent accumulations are widely used for palaeoenvironmental reconstructions. But these accumulations are created through the activity of predators (carnivorous mammals, birds of prey), the predation and digestion of which modify the preservation of ...

Polygamy in the Marsh Harrier, Circus aeruginosus: Individual Variation in Hunting Performance and Number of Mates [PDF]

open access: yes, 1982
1. Theories postulating that sexual task differentiation may lead to polygamy such that the sex investing the least effort in raising the offspring, engages in simultaneous matings, contrast with polygyny in raptors where the male provides most of the ...

Enhanced Trapping with an Optimized Graphene‐Based Bowtie Plasmonic Nanotweezer: Design, Analysis, and Bioanalytical Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Photonics Research, EarlyView.
A graphene‐based bowtie plasmonic nanotweezer is designed and optimized using particle swarm optimization and transfer matrix analysis. The structure achieves strong field confinement, delivering trapping forces up to 6 nN W−1 for 10 nm bioparticles with sixfold lower power requirements than conventional designs.

The Annual Cycle of German Adult Ospreys – Studies in the Breeding and Wintering Areas as Well as During Migration Since 1995 by Means of Satellite Telemetry

open access: yesПернатые хищники и их охрана, 2018
German Ospreys (Pandion haliaetus) were thought to migrate to sub-Saharan Africa. However, most of the many ring recoveries were from juvenile birds, and adults had never been satellite-tracked.

Vision‐Assisted Avocado Harvesting with Aerial Bimanual Manipulation

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This work outlines the design and implementation of a bimanual aerial robot that employs visual perception and learning to detect, reach, and harvest avocados. A new gripper and fixer arm assembly is used to harvest avocados, while visual perception enables the detection of avocados and estimation of their position and orientation for determining ...

Sex-biased parental care and sexual size dimorphism in a provisioning arthropod [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The diverse selection pressures driving the evolution of sexual size dimorphism (SSD) have long been debated. While the balance between fecundity selection and sexual selection has received much attention, explanations based on sex-specific ecology have ...

Information Transmission Strategies for Self‐Organized Robotic Aggregation

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
In this review, we discuss how information transmission influences the neighbor‐based self‐organized aggregation of swarm robots. We focus specifically on local interactions regarding information transfer and categorize previous studies based on the functions of the information exchanged.
