Theory of nonlinear loop mirrors with twisted low-birefringence fiber
Journal of the Optical Society of America B, 2001We analyze propagation in a nonlinear, birefringent optical fiber with twist. The results show that the polarization evolution is periodic, and they are applied to the analysis of a Sagnac interferometer. The period is calculated by using perturbation theory, and we find a condition for it to be independent of the initial polarization state.

Chromatic dispersion monitoring technique using birefringent fiber loop
2006 Optical Fiber Communication Conference and the National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference, 2006A chromatic dispersion monitoring technique using birefringent fiber loop is proposed. An unambiguous measurement range of 1500-ps/nm for 10-Gb/s NRZ signal is demonstrated without transmitter modification. This technique can be used to monitor multiple channels.

Nonlinear Optical Loop Mirror with a Twisted Fiber and Birefringence Bias
2006 European Conference on Optical Communications, 2006We examine the transmission characteristics in a symmetrical NOLM using a highly twisted fiber, and a quarter-wave (QW) plate in the loop. The QW plate adjustment enables tuning the critical power over a wide range.

The dynamical behavior of the nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM) with feedback and low birefringence twisted fiber in the loop is examined. It is found that the output of the NOLM with feedback depends on many parameters, including the fiber beat length, the polarization state of the counter-propagating beams in the loop, as well as the length, twist

Sensitivity-enhancing scheme of a polarimetric heterodyne sensor using a birefringent fiber loop
Optics Letters, 1990In order to improve the sensitivity of a fiber-optic polarimetric sensor, a new scheme utilizing a birefringent fiber loop with midloop frequency shifters is proposed. In this scheme, heterodyne signals with an integral multiple-phase sensitivity can be obtained in the frequency domain.

Soliton logic gate using low-birefringence fiber in a nonlinear loop mirror
Optics Letters, 1995We demonstrate, using numerical simulations, a new all-optical logic gate that combines the mechanisms of soliton dragging and nonlinear-optical loop mirrors (NOLM’s). The design uses specially wrapped low-birefringence polarization-maintaining fiber, which we recently demonstrated in the NOLM configuration.

A fiber-optic temperature sensor based on a pressure-induced birefringence singlemode fiber (SMF) loop mirror is developed. The pressure-induced birefringence singlemode fiber is made by applying a force against a short section of length of a singlemode fiber. The length of the sensing element for the temperature sensing is about 50 mm.

An all-fiber electric voltage sensor based on high-birefringence fiber loop mirror
SPIE Proceedings, 2005In this paper, an all-fiber electric voltage sensor based on high birefringence fiber loop mirror is presented. This voltage sensor is composed of a 3dB coupler and ~8m high birefringence (HiBi) fiber, part of which is affixed to a piezoelectric translator (PZT).

A fiber Bragg grating demodulation system using high-birefringence fiber loop mirror
SPIE Proceedings, 2014In this paper, a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) demodulation system based on high-birefringence fiber loop mirror (Hi-Bi FLM) is proposed and demonstrated. The approximate linear edge of the transmittance of the Hi-Bi FLM, which is a sinusoidal function of wavelength, is used to interrogate the sensing FBGs. The relationship between the wavelength period of
