Ultralow birefringence measurement in optical fibers by use of a fiber optical loop mirror

Technical Digest. Summaries of papers presented at the Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics. Postconference Edition. CLEO '99. Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics (IEEE Cat. No.99CH37013), 2003
Summary form only given. Most experimental techniques proposed to measure fiber birefringence use a section of a fiber with a length of several beat lengths. These techniques are convenient for high-birefringent fibers, but it is difficult to use them for low-birefringent fibers.

Multiwavelength erbium-doped fiber laser with a high-birefringence fiber loop mirror

Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics (CLEO 2000). Technical Digest. Postconference Edition. TOPS Vol.39 (IEEE Cat. No.00CH37088), 2000
Summary form only given. With the rapid development of wavelength-division-multiplexed systems in optical communication, multiwavelength laser sources have attracted considerable interest. Several types of multiwavelength rare-earth-doped fiber lasers have been demonstrated, which differ in the wavelength-selection methods used.

Theory of nonlinear loop mirrors with twisted low-birefringence fiber

Journal of the Optical Society of America B, 2001
We analyze propagation in a nonlinear, birefringent optical fiber with twist. The results show that the polarization evolution is periodic, and they are applied to the analysis of a Sagnac interferometer. The period is calculated by using perturbation theory, and we find a condition for it to be independent of the initial polarization state.

A pressure sensor based on high-birefringence fiber loop mirror

SPIE Proceedings, 2012
In this paper, a pressure sensor based on high-birefringence fiber loop mirror (HiBi-FLM) is proposed and demonstrated. The high-birefringence fiber is pasted to an inflated, elastic, ring shaped rubber gasbag and served as a sensitive probe. When outside pressure changes, the volume of the gas in the ring rubber gasbag changes and it makes the ...

Nonlinear Optical Loop Mirror with a Twisted Fiber and Birefringence Bias

2006 European Conference on Optical Communications, 2006
We examine the transmission characteristics in a symmetrical NOLM using a highly twisted fiber, and a quarter-wave (QW) plate in the loop. The QW plate adjustment enables tuning the critical power over a wide range.

Fiber optic sensors based on birefringence fiber loop interferometer

17th Congress of the International Commission for Optics: Optics for Science and New Technology, 1996
A high-birefringence polarimetric fiber sensor [1] typically includes a single mode polarization preserving fiber, an output polarizer and a detector. Two independent orthogonally polarized modes are propagating within the fiber and their phase difference may depend on pressure, temperature or other external parameters.

Polarization properties of nonlinear optical loop mirror with twisted fiber and birefringence bias in the loop

SPIE Proceedings, 2006
The nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM) is used in application like optical switching and demultiplexing, all-optical active mode locking, passive mode locking, pedestal suppression, pulse shaping, etc. This device offers a versatile way to obtain a nonlinear transmission behavior through the nonlinear differential phase shift between the two ...

Analysis of the nonlinear optical loop mirror with feedback and low-birefringence twisted fiber in the loop

SPIE Proceedings, 2004
The dynamical behavior of the nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM) with feedback and low birefringence twisted fiber in the loop is examined. It is found that the output of the NOLM with feedback depends on many parameters, including the fiber beat length, the polarization state of the counter-propagating beams in the loop, as well as the length, twist

Sensitivity-enhancing scheme of a polarimetric heterodyne sensor using a birefringent fiber loop

Optics Letters, 1990
In order to improve the sensitivity of a fiber-optic polarimetric sensor, a new scheme utilizing a birefringent fiber loop with midloop frequency shifters is proposed. In this scheme, heterodyne signals with an integral multiple-phase sensitivity can be obtained in the frequency domain.

Soliton logic gate using low-birefringence fiber in a nonlinear loop mirror

Optics Letters, 1995
We demonstrate, using numerical simulations, a new all-optical logic gate that combines the mechanisms of soliton dragging and nonlinear-optical loop mirrors (NOLM’s). The design uses specially wrapped low-birefringence polarization-maintaining fiber, which we recently demonstrated in the NOLM configuration.
