We describe the nonlinear optical loop mirror with a symmetrical coupler, a quarter-wave retarder, and highly twisted, low-birefringence fiber in the loop. We give a useful way to visualize the behavior (as a function of birefringence, twist, length, and input polarization) in terms of the Poincare sphere.

Abstract The dynamics of a nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM) with feedback using a high birefringence fiber in the loop are investigated. The effect of rotating input polarization angle on the output power and polarization angle is numerically examined, illustrating the sensitivity of the NOLM with feedback to the input’s polarization state, as ...

A novel density sensor based on high-birefringence fiber loop mirror
SPIE Proceedings, 2013In this paper, a novel density sensor based on high-birefringence fiber loop mirror is proposed and studied. The high-birefringence fiber is pasted to a ring shaped rubber gasbag and placed in the liquid. Fasten the gasbag to the bottom of the container. When the density of liquid is changed, the liquid level keeps the same.

With adoption of wavelength division multiplexing scheme to optical communication systems, multiwavelength optical signal source has drawn considerable attention. The conventional multiwavelength sources usually consist of the same number of lasers as wavelength channels and therefore become bulky and costly.

We experimentally demonstrate a temperature-stable multiwavelength erbium-doped fiber laser source using a high-birefringent photonic crystal fiber (HiBi-PCF) as the birefringent component of the Sagnac loop filter within the laser cavity. Three different high-birefringence (Hi-Bi) fibers are used in the loop filter to compare the temperature stability

Novel all-fiber variable optical attenuator based on high-birefringence fiber loop mirror
SPIE Proceedings, 2004In this paper, we propose a novel all-fiber variable optical attenuator based on high birefringence fiber loop mirror. Part of the birefringence fiber was pasted onto an equivalent-strength beam and by applying a strain with a high precision screw thruster on the free end of the beam, we observed that the transmission spectrum of the fiber loop mirror

Measurement of beat length in short low-birefringence fibers using the fiber optical loop mirror
Optics Communications, 2003Abstract In this paper we provide a detailed analysis and investigation of a novel experimental method to measure the birefringence in short low-birefringence fibers. This method is based on the fiber’s twist in a fiber optical loop mirror. It allows simple birefringence measurement in fibers with beat length within the range of 0.4–100 m.

Impact of fiber birefringence on optical switching with nonlinear optical loop mirrors
IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics, 2004We use a vector theory of cross-phase modulation to discuss how residual birefringence of the fiber loop affects the switching performance of a nonlinear optical loop mirror. It is found that the interaction between polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) and cross-phase modulation transfers spatial randomness of residual birefringence to temporal power ...

[Research on axial strain sensitivity of high-birefringence fiber loop mirror].
Guang pu xue yu guang pu fen xi = Guang pu, 2014In the present paper, the theoretical expressions for the axial strain sensitivity of high-birefringence fiber loop mirror (Hi-Bi FLM) was developed. The key influence factors on the axial strain sensitivity are discussed for the same input light source as the high-birefringence fiber material is certain, including the high-birefringence fiber length ...
