MFM analysis of recorded bit patterns of perpendicular media
Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials, 2001Abstract Read/write characteristics of a perpendicular double-layered medium with various thicknesses of soft magnetic layer δsoft using a ring head were investigated by analyzing the MFM image of the recorded bit pattern and reproduced waveform. It was found that the recording bits were written by the field of the head gap for the medium with δsoft ...

The potential of bit patterned media in shingled recording
Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials, 2012Abstract Shingled recording on continuous and bit patterned media (BPM) is compared. From a recording viewpoint, continuous media have the advantage due to the lack of a need to synchronise writing with dot position. For BPM the write windows at 4 Tbit/in 2 are only a couple of nm across, requiring extremely tight manufacturing tolerances.

IEEE transactions on magnetics
Track misregistration (TMR) in ultrahigh density bit-patterned media recording (BPMR) is a significant issue, severely degrading system performance. Although TMR can be managed by a servo control loop, this article proposes a hybrid TMR mitigation method

Modeling for write synchronization in bit patterned media recording
Journal of Applied Physics, 2012Bit patterned media recording (BPMR) is a contender for next generation technology after conventional granular magnetic recording (CGMR) can no longer sustain the continued areal density growth. BPMR has several technological hurdles that need to be overcome, among them is solving the problem of write synchronization.

To increase the areal density (AD) of data storage systems, the bit-patterned media recording (BPMR) is considered a promising candidate for next-generation data storage systems. In BPMR, magnetic islands are used to store the user data. Therefore, these

9/12 Two-dimensional modulation code for bit-patterned media recording
2016 Asia-Pacific Magnetic Recording Conference Digest (APMRC), 2016This paper presents a 9/12 two-dimensional (2D) modulation code as a way to overcome 2D intersymbol interference (ISI) in bit-patterned media recording (BPMR) systems. BPMR systems are regarded as one of the promising candidates for the attainment of areal density increases that are beyond the capacities of conventional storage systems.

Optimization of LDPC codes for bit-patterned media recording with media noise
2016 16th International Symposium on Communications and Information Technologies (ISCIT), 2016Challenges in bit-pattered magnetic recording (BPMR) include two-dimensional (2D) inter-symbol interference (ISI) constituted by both one-dimensional ISI and inter-track interference (ITI), and media noise arising from island position jitter (PJ) and island size fluctuations (SF) in both the down-track and cross-track directions.
