3D printer-driven design of a non-assembly titanium surgical instrument using compliant lattice flexures

open access: yesMaterials & Design
Metal additive manufacturing is a promising technology for the production of functional medical products, due to its high shape complexity and resolution, and ability to withstand sterilization temperatures.

In vitro properties of patient serum predict clinical outcome after high dose rate brachytherapy of hepatocellular carcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Following high dose rate brachytherapy (HDR‐BT) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), patients were classified as responders and nonresponders. Post‐therapy serum induced increased BrdU incorporation and Cyclin E expression of Huh7 and HepG2 cells in nonresponders, but decreased levels in responders.

The Use of Sound Recorders to Remotely Measure Grass Intake Behaviour in Horses

open access: yesAnimals
Visual observation to record grass intake is time-consuming and labour-intensive. Technological methods, such as activity monitors, have been used but only record head position.

Improving PARP inhibitor efficacy in bladder cancer without genetic BRCAness by combination with PLX51107

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Clinical trials on PARP inhibitors in urothelial carcinoma (UC) showed limited efficacy and a lack of predictive biomarkers. We propose SLFN5, SLFN11, and OAS1 as UC‐specific response predictors. We suggest Talazoparib as the better PARP inhibitor for UC than Olaparib.

Steering strategies for wasp inspired self propelled needles

open access: yesScientific Reports
Positioning a thin needle into a solid substrate near a target region is difficult because the needle can easily bend and buckle. Nevertheless, in nature, female parasitic wasps can do this by using buckling prevention and steering mechanisms. This study

Replication of Known Dental Characteristics in Porcine Skin: Emerging Technologies for the Imaging Specialist [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
This study demonstrates that it is sometimes possible to replicate patterns of human teeth in pig skin and determine scientifically that a given injury pattern (bite mark) correlates with the dentitions of a very small proportion of a population dataset,

TREX1, a predator for treating MSI‐H tumors?

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Immunotherapy benefits many patients; yet, some with MSI‐H tumors remain unresponsive despite their high immunogenicity. Xu et al. reveal that TREX1 enables immune evasion by degrading cytosolic DNA and suppressing cGAS–STING–IFN‐I signaling. TREX1 loss restores DNA sensing, increases CD8+ T and NK cell infiltration, and boosts antitumor immunity ...

The transmission of Leishmania infantum chagasi by the bite of the Lutzomyia longipalpis to two different vertebrates

open access: yesParasites & Vectors, 2012
Background Sandflies are vectors of Leishmania, the causative agent of leishmaniasis in mammalian hosts, including humans. The protozoan parasite is transmitted by the sandfly bite during salivation that occurs at the moment of blood feeding.
