NUTRITIONAL BUDGET FOR THE FRESHWATER SNAIL BITHYNIA GRAECA (GASTROPODA: BITHYNIIDAE) [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Molluscan Studies, 1996
The nutritional budget of Buhynia graeca (Westerlund) was studied using samples of a snail population of Lake Kerkini (N Greece). A laboratory investigation of food consumption and assimilation in B. graeca was undertaken using Aufwuchs as food. On the basis of this investigation estimates of natural consumption and assimilation efficiencies were made.

Epidemiological situation and molecular identification of cercarial stage in freshwater snails in Chao-Phraya Basin, Central Thailand

open access: yesAsian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine, 2016
Objective: To investigate the prevalence of cercarial trematode infection in snails and to examine the reconstruction of the phylogenetic relationship to explain the molecular system of cercarial stage trematodes to estimate the infection rate of in the ...

How can eDNA contribute in riverine macroinvertebrate assessment? A metabarcoding approach in the Nalón River (Asturias, Northern Spain)

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 1, Issue 4, Page 385-401, November 2019., 2019
Rivers are impacted ecosystems that need to be monitored regularly. Here, we have tested a metabarcoding approach to compare the results on water quality monitoring with conventional assessments for benthic macroinvertebrates. Water quality monitoring in freshwaters using macroinvertebrate eDNA performs equally well than conventional morphological ...

Land‐use in Europe affects land snail assemblages directly and indirectly by modulating abiotic and biotic drivers

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 10, Issue 5, May 2019., 2019
Abstract Type and intensity of land‐use vary in space and time and strongly contribute to changes in richness and composition of species communities. In this study, we examined land snail communities in forests and grasslands in three regions of Germany.

Effects of Habitat Types on Macroinvertebrates Assemblages Structure: Case Study of Sun Island Bund Wetland

open access: yesBioMed Research International, Volume 2019, Issue 1, 2019., 2019
Sun Island Bund Wetland (SIBW) is a river floodplain wetland located at the south part of Heilongjiang Province in Northeast China. An investigation of the influence of habitat type on macroinvertebrates assemblages structure was conducted in July 2016.

Morphological Characterization of Emerging Cercariae among Lymnaeid Snails from Barangay Cawongan, Padre Garcia, Batangas, Philippines

open access: yesJournal of Parasitology Research, Volume 2018, Issue 1, 2018., 2018
Background and Objectives. Lymnaeid snails are the known intermediate hosts of the liver fluke Fasciola spp. and therefore play an important role in the parasite’s life cycle. The study is conducted to determine specificity of snail host‐parasite interaction and to determine the snail‐trematode infection rate by cercarial emergence, characterizing the ...

Historical Drainage Evolution and Water Level Fluctuations in the African Great Lakes Shaped Phylogeny and Biogeography of Freshwater Gastropods

open access: yesJournal of Biogeography, Volume 52, Issue 12, December 2025.
ABSTRACT Aim The role of historical drainage connectivity and the influence of water level fluctuations in African lakes on the evolution and distribution of macroinvertebrates remain poorly understood. This is partly because evolutionary biology research has largely focused on mobile vertebrates, such as cichlids.

Modeling Aquatic Macroinvertebrate Richness Using Landscape Attributes

open access: yesInternational Journal of Ecology, Volume 2015, Issue 1, 2015., 2015
We used a rapid, repeatable, and inexpensive geographic information system (GIS) approach to predict aquatic macroinvertebrate family richness using the landscape attributes stream gradient, riparian forest cover, and water quality. Stream segments in the Allegheny River basin were classified into eight habitat classes using these three landscape ...

Declines in Freshwater Mussels and Loss of Mussel–Invertebrate Interactions in the Subtropical Waterbodies of Dhaka, Bangladesh

open access: yesAquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems, Volume 34, Issue 11, November 2024.
ABSTRACT Freshwater mussels are a globally threatened taxon, but little is known about population trajectories for species outside Europe and North America. To contribute to understanding of mussel conservation status outside these regions, we surveyed mussel and other invertebrate populations in waterbodies across Dhaka, Bangladesh, to assess ...
