Preliminary pharmacological screening of Bixa orellana L. leaves

Journal of Ethnopharmacology, 2006
Preliminary pharmacological studies were performed on the methanol extract of Bixa orellana L. (Bixaceae) leaves to investigate neuropharmacological, anticonvulsant, analgesic, antidiarrhoeal activity and effect on gastrointestinal motility. All studies were conducted in mice using doses of 125, 250 and 500 mg/kg of body weight.

Nature of the Vitamin A Activity of Annatto Seed (Bixa orellana L.)

The Journal of Agriculture of the University of Puerto Rico, 2022
The high vitamin A activity of the petroleum ether extract of the annatto seed has been confirmed. It ranges from 1,000 to 2,000 international units of vitamin A per gram of extract. It was found that a standard mixture of 3-percent acetone in petroleum ether did not remove any vitamin A-active material from a magnesium oxide-hyflo supercel column, on ...

An integrated genetic linkage map of Bixa orellana L.

Tree Genetics & Genomes, 2019
Bixa orellana L. is a plant from the Bixaceae family commercialized for its high bixin contents. Recently, demand for this pigment has led to the development of strategies for its genetic improvement. Through molecular markers obtained by sequence-related amplified polymorphism (SRAP), one β-cyclase marker and the two-way “pseudo-testcross” strategy an

Somatic Embryogenesis in Annatto (Bixa orellana L.)

2016
Our research group has pioneered the work on somatic embryogenesis of Bixa orellana (annatto), and since then we have directed efforts in understanding several aspects of this morphogenic pathway in annatto. Here, we present a synthetic description of such works, emphasizing anatomical analyzes and the characterization of the cellular alterations that ...

Development of carotenoid storage cells in Bixa orellana L. seed arils

Protoplasma, 2015
The arils of Bixa orellana L. seeds contain carotenoid storage cells (CSCs). The main compounds in these cells include bixin and norbixin, which are important pigments in the food and pharmaceutical industries. Although many studies have been conducted on these chemical constituents, the cellular events that occur during the development of the ...

The biotechnology (genetic transformation and molecular biology) of Bixa orellana L. (achiote)

Planta, 2018
Genetic transformation allows for greater bixin or norbixin production in achiote. Knowledge of genes that control the biosynthesis of these important secondary metabolites will allow for targeted amplification in transgenic plants. Annatto is a natural dye or coloring agent derived from the seeds, or their arils, of achiote (Bixa orellana L.), and is ...
