Investigating the use of rubber to attenuate the effect of blast load applied to a surrogate lower leg

open access: yes, 2008
Includes abstract.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 191-197).Landmines are the epitome of the perfect soldier: always ready, never tiring. Landmines also do not choose their victims - it may very well be an armed and protected soldier or an ...

Lilrb4a Suppression Reprograms Microglia to Mitigate APOE4‐Associated Amyloid Plaques and Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy in Association With a PPAR‐Linked Pro‐Clearance State

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Targeting Lilrb4a in Apolipoprotein E4 (APOE4)‐associated Alzheimer's disease (AD) reprograms microglia toward a beneficial, phagocytic state. Genetic deletion or antisense inhibition of Lilrb4a suppresses p‐SHP2/NF‐κB/STAT1 signaling, restores PPAR‐linked lipid and energy metabolism, and reduces amyloid plaque burden and cerebral amyloid angiopathy ...

Blast-related traumatic brain injury

open access: yes, 2013
A bomb blast may cause the full severity range of traumatic brain injury (TBI), from mild concussion to severe, penetrating injury. The pathophysiology of blast-related TBI is distinctive, with injury magnitude dependent on several factors, including ...

tBid‐Mediated Genetic Ablation of Connective Tissue Cells Reveals Their Key Regulatory Function During Limb Regeneration in Axolotls

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
We establish a tBid‐mediated cell ablation system in axolotls, achieve rapid and efficient ablation of multiple cell types, including muscle stem cell, spinal cord cell, and connective tissue (CT) cells. We investigate the role of CT using tBid‐mediated CT ablation and identify its essential role for limb development and regeneration.

Abdominal trauma in primary blast injury

open access: yes, 2010
BackgroundBlast injury is uncommon, and remains poorly understood by most clinicians outside regions of active warfare. Primary blast injury (PBI) results from the interaction of the blast wave with the body, and typically affects gas-containing organs ...

Harnessing Phase Separation for the Development of High‐Performance Hydrogels

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Hydrogels are indispensable for the development of next‐generation bioelectronics, soft robotics, and biomedical devices, where their mechanical properties determine performance and reliability. Among strategies to enhance hydrogel mechanics, phase separation enables controlled heterogeneity resulting in gel networks that are reinforced by ...

Neuro-glial and systemic mechanisms of pathological responses in rat models of primary blast overpressure compared to ‘composite’ blast.

open access: yesFrontiers in Neurology, 2012
A number of experimental models of blast brain injury have been implemented in rodents and larger animals. However, the variety of blast sources and the complexity of blast wave biophysics have made data on injury mechanisms and biomarkers difficult to ...
