The blast wave generated in an explosion imposes a dynamic load on any object in its field. This dynamic load is characterized by a rapidly reached peak value which then decreases as the blast wave decays. The net effect of the load depends both on the nature of the blast wave and on the geometry and construction of the object (Reference 1).

An Overview on the Blast Loading and Blast Effects on the RC Structures
Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2011An explosion is defined as a large-scale, rapid and sudden release of energy. Explosions, such as a bomb explosion within or immediately nearby a building and a gas-chemical explosion, can cause catastrophic damage on the building's frames, collapsing of walls, blowing out of large expanses of windows, and shutting down of critical life-safety systems.

AbstractDamage is mostly caused by the impulse transferred to the target. Therefore, the impulsive load measurements are summarized, which were mostly performed with simple and inexpensive test arrangements. This was possible, especially in the near field, where blast and blast fragment loads were causing damage to the soft as well as harder target ...

Blast affects the body at physiological, cellular, sub-cellular and molecular levels. As with any trauma-related injury, a large number of cellular responses are initiated at both the injury site (local), and throughout the body (systemic). A myriad of biochemical pathways are involved and sometimes a “dis”-regulated interplay between pro- and anti ...

Blast loading and building robustness
Progress in Structural Engineering and Materials, 2002AbstractAn overview of methods of blast load quantification and aspects of building design intended to reduce the damaging effects of explosions by increasing robustness is presented. Possible blast loading scenarios range from simple free‐air bursts, loading essentially isolated buildings, to complex urban environments, with road junctions and side ...

Uncertainties in Blast Loads on Structures
New Horizons and Better Practices, 2007The first step in protecting the occupants of a building from the effects of the detonation of an explosive device by a terrorist is to determine the maximum charge weight that the terrorist could reasonably be expected to use. The next step is to determine a set of possible detonation locations that could cause critical design loads on the structure ...

With the increased interest in traumatic brain injury (TBI) and its causes and prevention, there has been an increase in blast exposure experiments using animals. This increase has affected a large segment of the international biological testing community.

Mine blast loading experiments
International Journal of Impact Engineering, 2011Abstract A comprehensive review of the literature related to mine blast is provided. Then, a series of mine blast loading experiments are described where the soil moisture content, plate standoff, and plate shape (flat and V-shaped) were varied. Three experiments were conducted for each test configuration to quantify repeatability of the experiments.
