Transferrin independent serum inhibition of Blastomyces dermatitidis

Microbial Pathogenesis, 2002
Human serum has been reported to inhibit the growth of several fungal pathogens. Serum inhibitory activity has predominantly been associated with transferrin-mediated iron binding. We found that serum from several animal species (human, dog, mouse and fetal bovine) inhibited the growth of the dimorphic fungal pathogen, Blastomyces dermatitidisin vitro.

Cerebral Blastomyces dermatitidis infection in a cat

Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 2007

Blastomyces dermatitidis and Paracoccidioides brasiliensis

1994
Blastomycosis is a systemic fungal infection caused by Blastomyces dermatitidis. The manifestations range from self-limited infections, focal cutaneous or pulmonary lesions, destructive foci in various organs to rapidly progressive and fatal infection.1 The vast majority of blastomycosis cases begin from a pulmonary portal of entry2,3 although a few ...

Isolation of Blastomyces dermatitidis from Soil

Science, 1961
Through the intravenous inoculation of soil suspensions in the tail vein of mice, Blastomyces dermatitidis was recovered from a Lexington, Kentucky, soil sample. The positive specimen was collected in a tobacco-stripping barn.

Virulence of Blastomyces dermatitidis

1992
Virulence of disease-producing organisms is generally defined as the ability to produce a rapid course of infection or disease. Therefore, virulence of an organism can be considered to be its degree of disease-producing capacity.

Severe Oculofacial Sequelae of Cutaneous Blastomyces dermatitidis

Ophthalmic Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, 2016
This study reports a case of Blastomyces dermatitidis soft tissue infection resulting in a disfiguring lower eyelid ectropion from cicatricial and postinflammatory cutaneous changes. Primary treatment included intravenous amphotericin B followed by long-term oral itraconazole, which resulted in complete remission of the disease without debridement ...

Inhibition Of Blastomyces dermatitidis by Topical Lidocaine

Chest, 1983
This study was designed to determine if lidocaine inhibited growth of Blastomyces dermatitidis and thereby reduced recovery of the fungus from bronchoscopy specimens. Case records of 36 patients with pulmonary blastomycosis showed that when the fungus was present at microscopy, whether the specimen was sputum or bronchial washings, culture of the ...

The Ecology of Blastomyces dermatitidis

1992
Understanding the epidemiology of blastomycosis depends on comprehension of the ecology of Blastomyces dermatitidis. This interrelationship, without a doubt, is real. There is a paucity of data on both the ecology and the epidemiology of this disease. The present assumptions of these concerns either are based on analogy with other systemic pathogenic ...
