Blister Beetle Poisoning in Horses

SUMMARY Case records of 21 horses with acute illness following ingestion of hay containing dead striped blister beetles (Epicauta spp) were selected for review. Abdominal pain, fever, depression, frequent urination, shock, and, occasionally, synchronous diaphragmatic flutter characterized clinical illness.

These insects are generally viewed as friendly, docile, non-biting or non-stinging insects, which can be handled without any untoward effects on the handler. Oedemerid blister beetle dermatosis: A review

Blister beetle dermatosis is a distinctive vesiculobullous eruption that occurs after contact with three major groups of beetles (Order: Coleoptera). It is caused by a vesicant chemical contained in the body fluids of the beetles. The smallest and least known family is the Oedemeridae.

Rove Beetle Blistering - (Nairobi Eye)

'Nairobi Eye' is a condition caused by a blister beetle, Paederus eximius, found in Northern Kenya. It has not previously been described as a hazard for troops exercising in this area. Four cases are described. Recommended management is to wash the contact area initially with soap and water, and to treat subsequent lesions with flamazine.

Cantharidin poisoning due to “Blister beetle” ingestion

Cantharidin, the active ingredient of "Spanish Fly", is contained in a number of insects collectively called blister beetles and is a well known toxin and vesicant. We report on a case of ingestion of Mylabris dicincta ("Blister beetle") in Zimbabwe by a 4 year old girl. The ingested beetles were probably mistaken for the edible Eulepida mashona.

Blister beetle dermatitis.

Blister beetle dermatitis or paederus dermatitis is an irritant contact dermatitis due to accidental crush of insects belonging to paederus family on the skin. The characteristic features of blister beetle dermatitis are linear erythematous itchy vesicles over the exposed parts of body and kissing lesions.
