Incontinentia pigmenti (Bloch-Sulzberger-Syndrom)

A female infant, aged two weeks, presented with linear erythematous crusted papules, plaques and blisters on the right leg which had occurred two days after birth. Histological examination revealed typical features of incontinentia pigmenti in the inflammatory stage.

Some authors of recent articles on "incontinentia pigmenti" believe that Bloch-Sulzberger syndrome is a better name for this entity. The peculiar cutaneous hyper-pigmentation drew the attention of early investigators (Bardach, 1 Bloch, 2 Sulzberger, 3 and Naegeli 4 ) to this disease.

Klinefelter's syndrome and incontinentia pigmenti Bloch-Sulzberger

We report a newborn with incontinentia pigmenti Bloch-Sulzberger and male phenotype. Chromosome analysis revealed a Klinefelter's syndrome 47,XXY. These findings are compatible with the hypothesis of dominant sexlinked genes carried on the X-chromosome in this disease.

Incontinentia pigmenti is a rare disease. Because it is regarded as a dermatologic problem, few cases have been reported in the pediatric literature. This case is presented to illustrate the multisystem involvement which may be seen in the infant. Report of Case A 9-month-old white girl was admitted to Michael Reese Hospital on Feb. 28, 1957.
