A Methodical Approach to Interpreting the Red Blood Cell Parameters of the Complete Blood Count

open access: yesAmerican Society for Clinical Laboratory Science, 2017
A methodical approach to interpreting the panel of complete blood count (CBC) results helps to ensure that spurious results are detected and corrected before results are reported and helps to ensure that no results are overlooked in a diagnostic analysis

Circulating tumor cells in metastatic breast cancer patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors – a biomarker analysis of the ALICE and ICON trials

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
In this explorative biomarker analysis, we assessed serial sampling of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) with CellSearch in two randomized trials testing immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in metastatic breast cancer. Our data demonstrate a prognostic potential of CTCs, most apparent 4 weeks into ICI therapy.

Circulating tumor cells: advancing personalized therapy in small cell lung cancer patients

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is an aggressive form of lung cancer that spreads rapidly to secondary sites such as the brain and liver. Cancer cells circulating in the blood, “circulating tumor cells” (CTCs), have demonstrated prognostic value in SCLC, and evaluating biomarkers on CTCs could guide treatment decisions such as for PARP inhibitors ...

Localization of Malaria Parasites and White Blood Cells in Thick Blood Smears [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
Effectively determining malaria parasitemia is a critical aspect in assisting clinicians to accurately determine the severity of the disease and provide quality treatment. Microscopy applied to thick smear blood smears is the de facto method for malaria parasitemia determination.

A comparative study of circulating tumor cell isolation and enumeration technologies in lung cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Lung cancer cells were spiked into donor blood to evaluate the recovery rates of the following circulating tumor cell (CTC) enrichment technologies: CellMag™, EasySep™, RosetteSep™, Parsortix® PR1, and Parsortix® Prototype systems. Each method's advantages and disadvantages are described.

Cell type specific DNA methylation in cord blood: A 450K-reference data set and cell count-based validation of estimated cell type composition

open access: yesEpigenetics, 2016
Epigenome-wide association studies of prenatal exposure to different environmental factors are becoming increasingly common. These studies are usually performed in umbilical cord blood.

A fast semi-automatic method for classification and counting the number and types of blood cells in an image [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
A novel and fast semi-automatic method for segmentation, locating and counting blood cells in an image is proposed. In this method, thresholding is used to separate the nucleus from the other parts. We also use Hough transform for circles to locate the center of white cells. Locating and counting of red cells is performed using template matching.

KRAS and GNAS mutations in cell‐free DNA and in circulating epithelial cells in patients with intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms—an observational pilot study

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates that KRAS and GNAS mutations are more prevalent in patients with resected intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMN) compared to those under clinical surveillance. GNAS mutations significantly differ between the two patient cohorts, indicating that their absence may serve as a potential biomarker to support conservative ...

White blood cell count is an independent predictor of outcomes after acute ischaemic stroke

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Neurology, 2014
In patients with ischaemic stroke, elevated white blood cell count (WBC) has been associated with stroke severity on admission and poor functional outcome. However, previous studies did not control for confounding factors. We hypothesized that higher WBC

TIMELY: Improving Labeling Consistency in Medical Imaging for Cell Type Classification [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
Diagnosing diseases such as leukemia or anemia requires reliable counts of blood cells. Hematologists usually label and count microscopy images of blood cells manually. In many cases, however, cells in different maturity states are difficult to distinguish, and in combination with image noise and subjectivity, humans are prone to make labeling mistakes.
