Systemic dysregulation of apolipoproteins in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis serum

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal disease that damages motor neurons. This study found that people with ALS show significant changes in blood fats and the proteins that carry them. Several apolipoproteins were higher, lipid balances were altered, and normal protein–lipid relationships were disrupted.

Characterization of filter membranes with application to red blood cell removal

open access: yes, 2023
Removing red blood cells (RBCs) from blood to general RBC poor plasma is a common practice during blood tests, which improves the accuracy of biomarker detection in plasma.

Long‐term hippocampal alterations and cognitive impairment in a murine model of surgical sepsis

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Using a mouse model of surgical sepsis, we tested long‐term memory and analyzed the transcriptome of single cells isolated from the hippocampus. Survivor mice showed worse memory, loss of certain brain cell subpopulations, and abnormal immune cell activity—suggesting that post‐sepsis brain alterations may be linked to cognitive deficits.

The impact and deformation of press-fit metal acetabular components

open access: yes, 2012
PhDEarly failure of some metal-on-metal (MoM) hip implants are extensively reported but not fully explained. These arthroplasties commonly utilise large-diameter, thin-walled acetabular cups that have the advantage of minimal removal of acetabular bone ...

K+ transport in red blood cells from human umbilical cord

open access: yes, 2001
The current study was designed to characterise K+ transport in human fetal red blood cells, containing mainly haemoglobin F (HbF, and termed HbF cells), isolated from umbilical cords following normal parturition.

Identifying transcription factors controlling the basal expression of human MRP4 highlights a substantial role for Sp1

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The MRP4 transporter exports several drugs and signaling molecules. Here, we identified key promoter elements regulating basal MRP4 expression. Using reporter assays, we defined a conserved region with essential Sp1 and contributory Ets sites, which controlled basal MRP4 expression.

Derivation and characterization of retinal pigment epithelium from urine‐derived iPSCs

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Age‐related macular degeneration causes vision loss via RPE dysfunction and loss. Traditional iPSC therapies rely on invasive biopsies, limiting scalability. Here, we utilize urine‐derived stem cells as an accessible source to generate u‐iPSCs, successfully differentiated into pigmented RPE. This “Urine‐to‐Retina” platform provides a promising path for
