WBCAtt: A White Blood Cell Dataset Annotated with Detailed Morphological Attributes [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
The examination of blood samples at a microscopic level plays a fundamental role in clinical diagnostics, influencing a wide range of medical conditions. For instance, an in-depth study of White Blood Cells (WBCs), a crucial component of our blood, is essential for diagnosing blood-related diseases such as leukemia and anemia.

Early detection of breast cancer using total biochemical analysis of peripheral blood components: a preliminary study

open access: yesBMC Cancer, 2015
BackgroundMost of the blood tests aiming for breast cancer screening rely on quantification of a single or few biomarkers. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of detecting breast cancer by analyzing the total biochemical composition of ...

Modifications in FLAP's second cytosolic loop influence 5‐LOX interaction, inhibitor binding, and leukotriene formation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The enzyme 5‐lipoxygenase (5‐LOX) catalyzes the first step in the biosynthesis of leukotrienes (LTs) involved in inflammatory pathophysiology. After cellular stimulation, 5‐LOX translocates to the nucleus, interacting with the 5‐LOX‐activating protein (FLAP) to form LTA4 from arachidonic acid (AA).

Transfusion-related acute lung injury – afrequently undiagnosed reaction following transfusion ofblood components

open access: yesPediatria i Medycyna Rodzinna, 2015
Transfusion-related acute lung injury is the leading cause of mortality following transfusion of blood components. Its characteristic feature is acute hypoxaemia during or 6 hours after transfusion.

Transport of platelets induced by red blood cells based on mixture theory [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2017
Thrombosis is a common complication following the surgical implantation of blood contacting devices, and is strongly influenced by the phenomenon of near-wall enrichment of platelets. This paper describes a multi-constituent continuum approach to study this phenomenon.

B cell mechanobiology in health and disease: emerging techniques and insights into therapeutic responses

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
B cells sense external mechanical forces and convert them into biochemical signals through mechanotransduction. Understanding how malignant B cells respond to physical stimuli represents a groundbreaking area of research. This review examines the key mechano‐related molecules and pathways in B lymphocytes, highlights the most relevant techniques to ...

High prevalence of dengue, Zika, and chikungunya viruses in blood donors during a dengue outbreak and an endemic period in Colombia

open access: yesFrontiers in Medicine
ObjectiveArboviruses pose a challenge in ensuring the supply of pathogen-free blood components because they are not routinely screened in blood banks, and blood components from infected asymptomatic donors could be transfused.

Flow‐based immunomagnetic enrichment of circulating tumor cells from diagnostic leukapheresis product

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The number of circulating tumor cells obtained from prostate cancer patients was increased approximately 5‐fold compared to regular CellSearch when processing 2 mL diagnostic leukapheresis material aliquots and increased by 44‐fold when processing 20 mL DLA aliquots using the flow enrichment target capture Halbach‐array.
