Cytomegalovirus infection is common in prostate cancer and antiviral therapies inhibit progression in disease models

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Human cytomegalovirus infection is common in normal prostate epithelium, prostate tumor tissue, and prostate cancer cell lines. CMV promotes cell survival, proliferation, and androgen receptor signaling. Anti‐CMV pharmaceutical compounds in clinical use inhibited cell expansion in prostate cancer models in vitro and in vivo, motivating investigation ...

Changes in the Nanostructure of Red Blood Cells in Intraoperative Blood Loss during Spinal Cord Surgery

open access: yesОбщая реаниматология, 2013
Objective: to study impairments in the nanostructure of red blood cells in blood loss during spinal cord surgery. Subjects and methods. The study enrolled 17 patients operated on at the Center of Neurosurgery, City Clinical Hospital Nineteen, for spinal ...

Four Days in Heaven Spending Four Days in Hell [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
I spent four days this past weekend wallowing in the depths of hell. Around me swirled the maelstrom of battle, a spinning vortex of blood, death, destruction and loss.

Spontaneous Iliopsoas Hematoma following Microvascular Free Tissue Transfer. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Spontaneous hematoma within the iliopsoas muscle (SIH) is a rare complication most commonly seen in coagulopathic patients. Often, patients undergoing microvascular free tissue transfer are anticoagulated for anastomotic patency.

Association of high‐dose radioactive iodine therapy with PPM1D‐mutated clonal hematopoiesis in older individuals

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
In thyroid cancer patients, high‐dose (≥7.4 GBq) radioactive iodine therapy (RAIT) was associated with a higher prevalence of clonal hematopoiesis (variant allele frequency >2%) in individuals aged ≥50 years (OR = 2.44). In silico analyses showed that truncating PPM1D mutations conferred a selective advantage under these conditions.

Pathophysiological Mechanisms of Laser Correction in Critical Conditions

open access: yesОбщая реаниматология, 2006
The paper provides the generalized results of studies dealing with the use of low-intensive laser irradiation in blood loss-induced critical conditions in an experiment and in patients with severe mechanical injury.

Activation of electroneutral K flux in Amphiuma red blood cells by N-ethylmaleimide. Distinction between K/H exchange and KCl cotransport. [PDF]

open access: yes, 1987
Exposure of Amphiuma red blood cells to millimolar concentrations of N-ethylmaleimide (NEM) resulted in net K loss. In order to determine whether net K loss was conductive or was by electroneutral K/H exchange or KCl cotransport, studies were performed ...

cAMP-Inhibits Cytoplasmic Phospholipase A(2) and Protects Neurons against Amyloid-beta-Induced Synapse Damage [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
A key event in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the production of amyloid-β (Aβ) peptides and the loss of synapses. In cultured neurons Aβ triggered synapse damage as measured by the loss of synaptic proteins. α-synuclein (αSN), aggregates of which accumulate

Machine learning for identifying liver and pancreas cancers through comprehensive serum glycopeptide spectra analysis: a case‐control study

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study presents a novel AI‐based diagnostic approach—comprehensive serum glycopeptide spectra analysis (CSGSA)—that integrates tumor markers and enriched glycopeptides from serum. Using a neural network model, this method accurately distinguishes liver and pancreatic cancers from healthy individuals.

Estimation of Blood Loss in Total Knee Arthroplasty with or Without Tourniquet

open access: yesPakistan Journal of Medical Research, 2020
Background: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a procedure performed for end stage knee osteoarthritis to reinstate leg function, pain control and improve quality of life. The surgery, however, is associated with a substantial risk of concealed blood loss
