A Depolarizing Leak in Sodium Bicarbonate Cotransporter NBCe1 Causes Brain Edema

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objectives SLC4A4 encodes electrogenic sodium bicarbonate cotransporter NBCe1, prominently expressed in kidney and brain. Recessive loss‐of‐function variants in SLC4A4 cause proximal renal tubular acidosis, no brain edema. In the brain, NBCe1 is expressed by astrocytes, where it regulates pH and mediates astrocyte volume changes.

Perioperative Blood Pressure Control in Pheochromocytoma: The Role of Intravenous Urapidil

open access: yesEndocrinology Research and Practice
Pheochromocytomas are rare tumors derived from chromaffin cells of neural crest origin in the adrenal medulla. These neoplasms typically synthesize and secrete catecholamines. Excessive secretion of catecholamines can lead to severe and potentially fatal

The Role of Calcitonin Gene‐Related Peptide in High‐Altitude Headache: A Prospective Field Study

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective High‐altitude headache (HAH) is a common neurological condition associated with rapid ascent to high altitude. The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying HAH remain incompletely understood. Calcitonin gene‐related peptide (CGRP), a neuropeptide implicated in migraine pathophysiology, may play a key role in the pathophysiology of ...

DETERMINANTS OF SUBOPTIMAL BLOOD PRESSURE CONTROL IN HYPERTENSIVE PATIENTS: 24-HOUR AMBULATORY BLOOD PRES-SURE MONITORING

open access: yesARYA Atherosclerosis, 2010
INTRODUCTION: The study was conducted to define the determinants of suboptimal blood pressure (BP) control among hypertensive patients under treatment and explore a predictive model for detecting the patients at risk for increased BP.  &

RNA Sequencing Resolves Cryptic Pathogenic Variants in Mitochondrial Disease

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Mitochondrial diseases are the most common inherited metabolic disorders, characterized by pronounced clinical and genetic heterogeneity that complicates molecular diagnosis. Although DNA‐based sequencing approaches have become standard in genetic testing, up to half of patients remain without a definitive diagnosis.

Control of blood pressure in hypertensive children and adolescents assessed by ambulatory blood pressure monitoring

open access: yesBMC Pediatrics
Background There have been few studies evaluating the control of hypertension (HT) in children. This study aimed to assess the control of HT using ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) and to compare the parameters between the uncontrolled HT and ...

Added Prognostic Value of EEG Reactivity in Comatose Patients Following Cardiac Arrest

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objectives To evaluate the added prognostic value of EEG reactivity for favorable outcome compared with background analysis during and after targeted temperature management (TTM). Methods Prospective observational cohort study of comatose post–cardiac arrest patients admitted to a single academic center between 2017 and 2022, all undergoing ...

Acute Kidney Injury After Mechanical Thrombectomy for Stroke in Patients With Pre‐Existing Renal Impairment

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objectives Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common but often underrecognized complication in ischemic stroke patients undergoing mechanical thrombectomy, particularly among those with pre‐existing renal impairment. This study evaluated the incidence, risk factors, and clinical impact of AKI in this high‐risk population.

Racial Disparities in Blood Pressure Control and Treatment Differences in a Medicaid Population, North Carolina, 2005-2006

open access: yesPreventing Chronic Disease, 2011
IntroductionRacial disparities in prevalence and control of high blood pressure are well-documented. We studied blood pressure control and interventions received during the course of a year in a sample of black and white Medicaid recipients with high ...
