Apparent blood viscosity was measured on freshly shed blood from 127 healthy subjects, ages 21 to 88, and patients hospitalized in Tokyo Metropolitan Yoikuin Geriatrics Hospital, over age 60. Determination of blood viscosity was performed at 37°C using rotational viscometer at shear rates between 0.07 and 4.6sec-1.Mean blood viscosity in 43 healthy ...

Prediction of anomalous blood viscosity in confined shear flow.
Red blood cells play a major role in body metabolism by supplying oxygen from the microvasculature to different organs and tissues. Understanding blood flow properties in microcirculation is an essential step towards elucidating fundamental and practical

Modelling of the pulsatile blood flow in an arterial tree of retinal vasculature [PDF]
This paper was presented at the 2nd Micro and Nano Flows Conference (MNF2009), which was held at Brunel University, West London, UK. The conference was organised by Brunel University and supported by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, IPEM, the ...

A hydrogel for intra‐articular injection for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is formulated and comprehensively studied. After administration, the hydrogel induces a metabolic reprogramming of immunometabolism of macrophages to trigger fatty acid oxidation subsequently inducing polarization of anti‐inflammatory M2 macrophages. This results in

BACKGROUND: In sickle cell disease (SCD), polymerization of hemoglobin S (HbS) leads to the formation of rigid, non-deformable sickled RBCs. Loss of RBC deformability, sickling and irreversible membrane damage causes abnormal blood rheology, and ...

It is shown that initiated by action of molecular viscosity impulse flow, directed usually from the moving fluid to limiting it solid surface, can, under certain conditions, turn to zero and get negative values in the case of non-stationary flow caused ...

In this study, a physically enhanced vascular dECM bioink and used 3D‐coaxial bioprinting are developed to fabricate mature brain blood vessels for cerebral atherosclerosis research. This model demonstrates that vascular geometry‐induced hemodynamic changes trigger vascular inflammation, ensuring its potential for cerebrovascular research.

Small amounts of potassium oxalate probably have no effect on the viscosity of the blood and changes hitherto ascribed to it can be attributed either to variation in carbon dioxide content or to sedimentation of the red blood cells.

Rotational behavior of red blood cells in suspension---a mesoscale simulation study
The nature of blood as a suspension of red blood cells makes computational hemodynamics a demanding task. Our coarse-grained blood model, which builds on a lattice Boltzmann method for soft particle suspensions, enables the study of the collective ...
